I tried to get some drinking buddies out of the pub to do non-pub stuff. Ended up in the park with two others, the barman and his wife. Good times were had. Then we went to the pub.

Some drinking buddies were, and still are my best friends. Always willing to go the extra mile, but on the other hand they'd be the types who would make sure you got home in one piece even if they had to go door to door for half the night to find whatever party you crashed out in etc. It was more the ones on the periphery, the ones you fall in with because of drinking rather than friendship, they drift away pretty quickly when the lights come up and it's time for cold analysis.
