Buying a new car

Looking for a bit of advice. We are planning on changing our VW Up! for a new car and paid a visit to a dealer last week. He spec'd up a new Mini and came back to us with a quote and the trade-in allowance on the UP! We were offered €6k for the UP! as a trade-in and full whack on the Mini. Basically he offered us 43% of the list price for the UP! so I think its a compete waste of time dealing with them if it's such a low ball offer.
Will I do better sticking with VW for the next car or is it just that Mini dealers offer v. poor trade-ins?

How old is the UP!? When you say list price, do you mean price car is new or price similar cars of that age are selling on the forecourt?

Sorry the UP! is a 132 D reg. When I say list I mean the full price VW price for the same car and spec now (metallic etc.).

Take aa look at the Seat Mii and Skoda City Go basically the same car as the up just different badges. Both them company's are owned by VW. The Peugeot 107, Citroen C1 and Toyota Aygo worth a look too again basically the same car underneath but they each have there own look. The Renault Twingo is another you could look at. Maybe have a look at the Fiat 500L as well you might like it some people don,t. If you want to go bigger the Skoda Fabia and Suzuki Swift are both very nice cars.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Typically a car will lose 50% of it's price every 3 years, the dealer then has to make a margin on it and provide a warranty so at 43% this leaves them room to do this. Perhaps try to sell it private to get closer to 50%.

Cheapest 13 reg UP! being sold by a dealer is asking 7900. Somebody with no trade in will probably get a straight sale discount off that price so might buy it for 7400. The dealer also needs to cover his overheads such as the cost of prepping the car for resale, service it, then stick a warranty on it and make a profit. You should shop around as you might do a bit better or play one dealer off another but realistically its not miles off. The other option is to try and sell the UP! privately and then negotiate a straight sale discount off the new car.

No I said every 3 years so a €30k car...
    3 years - €15k
    6 years - €7.5k
    9 years - €3.75k

Keep in mind that margins on minis are small, and they can only retail used minis on their forecourt, basically everything non mini goes to trade or to a sister garage if they have one.
Either way it means you'll rarely do well on your trade in.

Thanks, guess the easiest way is to sell it myself and do a straight deal.
