    Hi Folks,

Staying in Santander in July, would like to get out at least once - anyone cycled around this area before? Recommend bike hire etc?

    thanks

I don't know much about cycling in the immediate vicinity of Santander although it's a really nice area but if you like hills you're about 90mins away by car from the Picos de Europa. Incredible scenery, quiet roads with great surfaces. Some fairly serious climbs too, but what goes up must come down :D
I stayed in Potes, three great climbs start there. Puerto San Glorio is about 28km@5% so long but very doable and breathtaking views. Piedrasluengas is longer but averages about 4% and the climb up to Fuente Dé is about 20km@3.5%. There's also the climb up to Sotres from Arenas Cabrales with a couple of km well over 10% if you like suffering ;)

I hired my bike from http://www.cycling-rentals.com/ as it was the best option for delivery to where we were staying but afaik there are some shops in Santander that rent out bikes.

Brilliant thanks for the info. Picos looks like a great spot.
