Engine malfunction warning on 2008 Ford Focus

I have a 2008 1.6 Ford Focus Zetec tdci and recently I have been getting an engine malfunction warning on the dashboard comp. This happens when I twist the key twice in the ignition before I even start the engine and it usually goes again when I take the key out of the ignition and start it up again. Anyone have any ideas why this is happening?
Last month while driving the warning came on and the engine management light came on aswell so I brought it to the garage and the mechanic said he reconditioned the turbo and that there wasn't anything else wrong with it but now recently again the engine malfunction warning is coming on before I start the ignition

You need to go back to your mechanic. The light could be for hundreds of reasons, but given you've just had work done, it shouldn't be ignored.
Turbos normally go for a reason, hopefully they found and fixed the cause of the failure rather than just throwing a turbo in.

I would get the battery checked also as I know the focus can throw all sorts of lights and error messages if its on the way out.

I think it's fairly common for the check engine light to be on due to non-working glow plugs on that 1.6 PSA engine. You need to have a mechanic plug a diagnostics kit and see what exactly the car is complaining about. I cannot imagine a check engine light coming on for a bad turbo itself, maybe if the wastegate mechanism is not working and it's overboosting but I don't see how reconditioning the turbo has anything to do with it.

As Colm said that light could be on for any reason get codes read and come back.
