the road that runs past Lidl and Blacklion Manor is to be extended, coming out near the top of Applewood Heights. It's part of longer link road that connects up with the road through Delgany Wood - the bit in between (past St Laurence's school) is to be straightened and widened.

It is running through Seagreen Estate so would expect it won't open until Phase 2 is finished.

Because what we really need is more traffic at the lights at Lidl...

I don't think it's dependent on anything at Seagreen, it was supposed to be open already but has been delayed while they sort out traffic calming measures at Laurence's. Eventually the dogleg in the road that Laurence's is on is to be bypassed, but that's some way away.

Of course it was terrible planning to put all the new housing to the south of the town and the new schools to the north, but the new road should help traffic as there will be 2 routes to Lidl and the new schools rather than everything going through the Redford traffic lights.

What he said!!! - all the Lidl and schools traffic will have a choice of coming from/going back up toward St. Laurences and avoid the lights. There'd be a period of teething problems and further traffic surveys would be required to analyse what green times to give to each flow at the lights. Eventually they'll get there, eventually.

One would think that a roundabout would be a better option at the Redford/Templecarrig junction, but perhaps the traffic management personnel in the Council are better equipped to have made the decision to put lights there.

Traffic light controlled junctions can manage flows better than a roundabout in heavy peak traffic. Roundabouts will always have one or two roads which are a nightmare to get onto from (the N11 Loughlinstown roundabout coming from the Shankill or hospital side is one that comes to mind, also the Leopardstown junction (beside the Luas fly-over) removed the roundabout in favour of lights cause it can manage the traffic better).

the traffic lights at Blacklion and Redford are only needed for about 2 hours a day. The rest of the time they could be turned off (or set to green on the main road and flashing amber on the side roads), but that doesn't seem to be an option in Ireland - I've seen it done in other countries.

The red lights at this junction seem to be totally optional 24hrs a day.

I think the developer was hoping to have the road open by the end of the summer.
