I'm living in Germany and I want to send a lad living in Ireland a bottle of Metaxa. What's the best way of doing this?

Can I just pick one up in the supermarket here and send it through the post, or better just ordering online from an Irish retailer?

Order online - it's not legal without clearing customs charges in advance which a private individual can't

I don't know of any online seller who has the required arrangements with Irish revenue to make the transaction legal. Unless, of course, it's an Irish retailer.

OP, check with the German postal system if they will post liquids (An Post don't), if they don't, use a courier.

But do note that it's not legal to ship alcohol without the required revenue arrangements. Chances are, though, that it will get through fine, either posted or bought online but it could be confiscated (unless from Irish online retailer).

Cheers, I'll go with an Irish online retailer. Any recommended ones? I've only been able to locate the 5 star bottle in Irish stores, but not the 7 or 12. Can I purchase from UK, or is it the same as the EU regarding importing.

An Post won't allow alcohol through the post.

You can send alcohol within Ireland. For other countries, the local post services decide what can/can't be sent based on the service they offer.

An post use airmail for all their export parcels and post whereas in UK royal mail offer a slower second class service which uses road and sea - restrictions on liquids don't apply for road/sea services.

Any recommendations, google is not helping me? I've only been able to find drinkstore, but they only do the 5 star version.

There are a few which charge Irish VAT and clearly dearer prices for here which would suggest Revenue are aware of them at least.

Master of Malt have the 12 star - https://www.masterofmalt.com/other-grape-brandy/metaxa/metaxa-12-star-brandy/?srh=1 but the shipping on one bottle is hideous - I've only ever ordered from them with a mate and multiple bottles each. I believe, but have no way of proving, that they're Revenue compliant.
