Hi there, just bought a new TV which is saorview enabled. I live in an apartment block which only has an aerial cable (the white one). Is there any way I can get HD channels?

Where are you located? An indoor antenna might work.

Thats the old analogue upc now virgin media signal
Depending on where your appartment is,you might pick up the saorview hd channels with an indoor aerial
Have you a window with a view to the south Dublin hills?

How built up is the area and do you have a view towards the South Dublin hills
By how built up,I mean are you lower down than surrounding buildings?
Also have you a window facing the Dublin mtns ,can you see the three rock mast? Or Kippure?

If its the Dublin mtns and specifically theres a good view out to 3rock or kippure then yes a standard indoor aerial will get you saorview

It is the Dublin mountains and I am on the 1st floor (top floor) if my block. There is houses across the road from me. The window doesn't face the mountains directly. It's about 90degrees to them.

Buy a cheapo indoor aerial in your local Euro shop and give it a shot. No big loss if it doesn't work out.

You should not be getting these for free. I don't know what is going on here but if you are not paying for Virgin Media then something is happening that shouldn't be. Maybe someone has tapped into it or possibly it wasn't disconnected after a previous subscriber left.

Nothing for you to do really but be aware that you may lose these channels at any time.

It's analogue cable - the only way for Virgin to switch it off is to send a service agent out to the premises to physically cut the connection to the network. Which sometimes they don't do, particularly when it comes to apartments where they would have to get access to the premises.
