Towards the end of 2015 I cancelled my membership with my club as I knew that I would not be able to play any golf in 2016
I hope to be back at start of 2017. I was wondering would my handicap be still active? If so I was maybe going to join some place cheap with distance membership to keep it active so I wouldn't have to play 3 cards etc to get a new handicap when I return to playing
is there some way I can check if its now gone inactive

The GUI has tightened up on the distance membership scam. You are going to have to actually play the course at the club where you are a "member" enough times to get a handicap from there before you are allowed play opens elsewhere.

That would be ok. I could probably manage to play 3/4 times just not every weekend

Your ignorance of the current golfing landscape in Ireland is astounding, but not uncommon for those in their ivory towers!!!.
OP no your HC laspes after 6 months of ceases to be a member and you will be required to submit 3 news cards.

The people in ivory towers are those who expect others to pay for the upkeep of the golf courses they want to play at reduced rates.

Please refrain from calling it a scam, when it clearly is not. Choose your words better next time. Thanks

Your handicap ceases the minute you are not a member of a club. AFAIR If you renew or join another club within 3 months they you may not have to submit 3 new cards

Isn't that part of the problem guys leaving clubs then handing in 3 bad cards in order to increase their handicap. As far as I'm aware you have to declare if you were a member of a club previously. But I guess that's the not the case always.

OK. You can tell me the correct term for someone who intends to join a club and is asking if he can hold onto a previous handicap so he can avoid playing there.

Ah that auld tired argument, just because you pay extortionate subs for overpriced course maintenance, doesn't give you the right to be a golf snob!!!.

It's based on an honor system, if someone wants to cheat, there is little that can be done about it, other than inform people of the correct procedure.
You are correct when rejoining a club or joining a new club you must declare your golfing history, but not all clubs follow those rules.

Simple, ignorance of the rules. It's not a crime you know!!!. You can choose to offer advice about the best practice or stand aloof and cast judgement from the comfort of the lofty impenetrable ivory towers, your choice.
