I'm just wondering, if you are buying a car privately, particularly if you're not from the area, what's the correct procedure in getting a car inspected by a trusted mechanic? Do you advise the seller that you will pay him once the mechanic is happy? Or do you complete the sale, bring it to the garage and hope nothing is wrong? Would private sellers understand this sort of caution? Or would they be worried that you are going to drive the car away without paying?

    This too shall pass.

Get a reputable mechanic from your locality to vet the car for you. Never part with money before being thoroughly satisfied that the car is 100% genuine.

I have gotten a main dealer mechanic (local to the seller) to do a good look over a car for me in the past. Put my mind at ease for 70 quid I think it was but also knew the engine could just as easily blow up 5 miles down the road.

If someone has nothing to hide then they shouldn't have any objection to an inspection which is costing them nothing. If they do then that's reason enough to walk.

By the way I had the seller drop it off there earlier in the day and I arrived that evening

When private sale is done it's done, any checks you want to do need to be done beforehand. A seller shouldn't have any problem if it's taken to a proper mechanic, they may be reluctant though to say let you take a 2014 Golf GTI to someone doing nixers out of their mothers back garden.
