BMW E90 DPF

Hi - Any BMW gurus out there?

Any suggestions for dealing with aging DPF in a BMW E90 320D?
DPF light came on for the first time this evening (Ironically after 1800kms of motorway this week!)
Mycarly is telling me the DPF has 22g soot and 63.75g ash.
Also reporting Fault codes for the DPF which according to DIS v57 are:
452A - Limited remaining distance of particulate filter available (have had that one for a while)
4D4A - Maximum Service Life of particulate filter exceeded (obviously the new fault code that triggered the light on the dash)
Is this error code mileage based? (265k km) or is it based on the ash quantity?

Not particularly worried yet as I expect I can drive for some time without issue but should probably get it sorted. Have seen lots of places (online) that claim to sort out DPF issues but I suspect that most of these just force regeneration which I dont need (spend a lot of time on motorways) and I can do myself anyway with mycarly.

Not sure I want to go down the road of DPF removal (although my EGR is throwing faults also so maybe I should get both removed and deleted?) Have also been told to "just powerwash it!" but I'm not sure thats the way to go either?

Any recommendations in Cork area (or elsewhere even) for someone to professionally clean/recon this DPF or are new or recon ones available at a reasonable price anywhere?

Not familiar with mycarly, but what are the limits (soot/ash) for your car?

mycarly for bmw is "handy as a small pot" (have no association with them but I think its a very nice product). It doesn't have all the functionality of something like DIS (which I find very cumbersome to use) but you can read fault codes as you are cruising down the motorway :D

Cant actually find those limits for soot and ash anywhere although mycarly does tell me that I should have the DPF professionally cleaned if the ash mass goes over 100g. Not sure what that is based on though.

Having another look at DIS it tells me:

Distance traveled since last regneration = -20.754km (not sure what the minus means?)
Calculated remaining mileage of the particulate filter = 0km
Exhaust gas back pressure = 17mbar (at idle)

DPFs are new to me :( Am I in trouble?

The replacement of the dpf is mileage based on some bmw's
If the dpf is operating well as your is I wouldnt worry about it.
17mbar is equal to 0.24psi, what pressure is showing at about 3k revs?
If you want to erase the code you will have to 'tell' the car the dpf has been replaced, that's a choice for you to make.

As you have DIS, run this test. Should tell you where you are re DPF.

    Many thanks Irishbloke and dieselbug.

You are spot on - I think it is entirely mileage based (Im at 265k kms) I dont know what the trigger mileage is but I suspect that at some point in the cars history it may have been reset by someone else.
In my case the DPF light comes on now after approx 5 minutes of running but hitting the BC button makes it go away for the remainder of the journey.
Have done a little more looking at it and the DIS test was most helpful in that it gave me max permissible values that I could refer to.
    My 3000 RPM back-pressure is 80hPa

Running the DIS test I get 120mbar @ 4000 RPM and it states the max permissible is 200mbar.

Based on this I think I am ok for a while but will go ahead and get the DPF cleaned/checked properly at some point in the near future and once that is done I will reset the fault code using DIS which I assume should tell the car that I have replaced the DPF? (or is there another function that I need to look for)

    Thanks again

Yip, sounds like you are good for a while yet.

On the E60 it's totally mileage based, comes up at 120k miles I think.
It's resettable without diagnostics software via I drive, but basically it just zero's the counter, so I'm sure it will come back at 240k mls.

I would think resetting yours will do the very same.

Hi V1 - I have the Carly for BMW paid app, but I've never that screen of engine parameters - how did you reach it, or is it a different app? Cheers, C
