Subwoofer setup

    Hi folks,
Anyone around dublin with equipment for setting a subwoofer up?

I've seen few articles on Web using an oscilloscope to set the gain on a sub to avoid clipping. I've a alpine type r 10 subwoofer in caused enclosure and gain on amplifier set to about half. The amplifier is alpine mrdm650

Sounds pretty good but wouldn't mind being more scientific about it.

I played back a 40hz downloaded track on my phone and turned up head unit volume to 3 quarters.. Then slowly increased the gain on the sub till I think I head a change in sound..

    Hard to tell though..

My amplifier is few years old and wondering do they loose power as they get older i.e would the gain need to be set higher?

Head unit is pioneer f70 double din.. Very happy overall but the tweaker in me wants to get the best out of setup.

I'm using time alignment setting on the head unit and measured distances to speakers from listening position and input them. Have crossover on sub set at 80hz with low pass filter on head unit with 12db slopes. Hpf on front and rear speakers set at 100hz crossover and 12db slopes.

Also wanted to check if anyone uses auto loudness feature on pioneer units? Its supposed to increase radio volume in relation to car / road noise.

Final question is around speaker hiss.. I'm using high level outputs from head unit to factory fitted amplifier in the car. Even with an attenuation cable fitted between the outputs and amp still get a low hiss with low volume.

    Any solution?

    Apologies for long thread.
    Thanks
    Mick
