Looking for a hydration solution that doesn't contain sweeteners, anybody know of one? Preferably that I could order from an online resource., but not averse to using a physical shop(!).

The usuals; High5 Zeros, SIS, ORS all contain some variety of artificial sweetener.

If it's just salt replacement your after you cant go wrong with S-Caps. Created by a vegan distance runner who wanted something without all the muck you get in the more popular brands. They also work great. They are just capsules though rather than a hydration mix.

I bought them through Edge Sports in Cork but they can be bought online.

I'll never go back to any of the dissolvable tabs after using these.

Cheers, they look good. Stick them in the back pocket during a cycle?

Dioralyte does the trick for me.

I have a top bar bag myself so I just stick them in that. I have thrown them in the back pocket of my shorts on long runs though & they've held up fine.

+1, yellow flavour mixes better than the purple one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27 porcupine3

Yeah the yellow ones are the only ones I use. 20 sachets for €8.40, 3 to a bottle.
I would have one mix of that and one bottle of water on long spins, and maybe carry a spare sachet or two just in case.

I've 2 salt sachets from chippers in case I get a cramp on the road. Other than that, water. bananas for potassium.

Electrolytes are fancy names for minerals that we get from our diet.

If you have a decent diet it's really hard not to get adequate minerals on board; with the exception of sodium. Easy one to add, Maldon FTW ☺.

If out for a really long ride, sodium isn't exactly hard to find...

Thats' a great read. Makes sense.

The main reason I put tabs in my bottles is that water tastes crap out of my bottles without it... And yes I wash them, always get that plasticky taste.

I thought high5 has natural variety (my understanding was no taste and no sweeteners but not sure 100%)

If you're just looking for hydration then you'll be grand adding a pinch of salt to your water.

If you want to be really particular and match the sodium chloride/ potassium chloride mix used you could try mixing regular salt and LoSalt.

Fyi, dioralyte has artificial sweetener, energy gels usually won't but many will have artificial preservative (which I'm guessing you'd like to avoid too?).

Not really any of my business, but why are you avoiding artificial sweetener?

    You could make your own:

I'm not keen on artifical sweetners either so I use Nuun Active - they're handy and at least one if them has no artificial sweetners:

Cycle Superstore in Tallaght stock them or they can be bought on line from the likes of Evans

Kept an account on a long hilly ride yesterday.

10hrs or so in saddle, 240km or so and a lot of climbing. Temp about 10C under moonlight at start and 25C with no shade or clouds for majority of day; felt hot as fcuk to this Paddy abroad!

Drank to thirst and consumed 5.75L. Added salt from deli type sachet and from salt in cafe. Felt fine at finish.

According to drinks industry I'd probably should have drank double.

Interesting podcast on scienceofultra.com where two USA army scientists discuss hydration and there estimate of fluids requirement is 1ml per calorie burned. Starvation guestimate of calories yesterday (large pinch of salt required here☺) was 5300 call so close enough.

Diorolyte is designed for rehydrating rather than maintaining hydration. Wouldn't recommend that.
Ps contains glucose which is a sweetener...

Really interesting. I thought about this and have been over-drinking. Did a 60k along the canal yesterday and got through 2.5 bottles drinking to thirst. Last year touring I was going thru 8 litres per day in hot weather.

I'll throw one out of left field and see what he think.

There is a couple of lads in the club who swear by Tonic Water ( no Gin) prior to club spins and races (one of them) , they reckon it does the job . Isn't something I've tried

There is some evidence that tonic water prevents cramp......

Really - does that actually work?!

You should be able to get an electrolyte mix on line - I got a pack of powder from myprotein. Just a very small scoop in the water bottle.

I do tend to just use the sweetened tabs, but if I'm having a post ride shake I sometimes throw a scoop in. The effectiveness in general is up for debate, but if you are going for electrolytes the bag of powder definitely works out much cheaper than the likes of Dioralyte or the tabs (if you can get over the salty taste).

It works for me for night time cramps. Only ever got a cramp on the bike once, before I had the salt so dunno if it fixes it en route.

The link to Ross Tuckers piece upthread suggests it shouldn't work though...
