EGT or Pyrometer kit?

Would anyone know where I can get a marine spec guage + EGT kit, preferably with an audible alarm?

I found some in the US but the guage is only IP65 which I'd be wary of In an open cockpit.

    Suggestions appreciated!

I'm a rag head, so excuse my ignorance :D

Why would you need this on a boat? only ever heard of them used on aircraft.

They allow you monitor whether the engine is being fuelled and cooled ok. Exhaust Gas Temperature going up is a warning sign the engine is heading for trouble especially on a turbocharged engine. The usual cause is over boost which will lead to things like melted or cracked Pistons which is really bad news 10 miles offshore as the engine is going to die. Even worse a cracked piston can allow a diesel start sucking up crankcase oil and consuming it so shut down no longer works. Picture the scene with a screaming runaway Diesel engine burning lube oil and clouds of smoke and you're a few feet away waiting for the shrapnel.

The reason for over boost is typically a seized wastegate, a significant risk with condensation and salt in the marine environment.

On aircraft they allow you adjust the fuel richness to as lean as possible - maximum EGT, and then back it off a little to help cool the piston crowns a little . This gives maximum cruise economy and minimises the risk of fouling a spark plug while not running so lean that the pistons are damaged.

Have a look at the kit I'm using in my cruiser restoration it can be set up to take lots of different sensor readings you can also calibrate it to set off an alarm or warning light at any given setting.

I'd actually followed and read the link you posted on your thread. Genius piece of gear!

I bought the US guage kit with alarm after excellent technical assurance on the waterproofing but the problem neither I or a really good mechanic can solve is where to install the probe as the Mercruiser 120 TDI injects water into the exhaust almost right after the turbo manifold which is shrouded in a very very expensive heatshield which might have to also be modified!

Not really ready to drill and weld there!
