Should I contact the company?

    Hi folks,

    I have applied for a job recently. Its a large multi national tech company (not Google or FB, but a similar vibe). I applied approximately 3 weeks ago and havent heard anything back. I can log in to their job portal and see that my application is sitting in the "In Review" stage

    I appreciate these things take time to go through. However, I am going on holidays for 3 weeks in 3 weeks time (3 is the magic number here) so Im worried that if I leave it any longer I won't be able to attend and interview and might miss the boat.
    • Anybody got experience of this situation?
    • Am I within my rights to contact them in the hope they hurry up or is this unlikely to achieve anything?
    • I have found some of their recruiters on LinkedIn also, would it be bad form to approach them directly, explaining my position?

    I would make sure to set an OOO reply on your email account saying something on the lines of "out of town" or "abroad" (I would not suggest saying on vacation as it just sounds less professional) and mention that you can be reached on your mobile number +123456789. Definitely mention the dates you are gone. Do that even if it means some roaming charges to take a brief call. This obviously means you should check your emails at least once a day.

    If they then call you, you should at least be able to set up a Skype interview. I would find it acceptable to be told that a phone interview would incurr roaming charges and if a candidate asked to do all interviews on Skype (with video so be sure of the connection!) and keep most communication on email.

    Having worked as hiring manager for a long time now I would find this to be the best approach here and I would very much disapprove if I am contacted by a candidate saying vacation time is coming up, if I may please hurry up (or so it would sound to me).

    As a recruiter, I'd probably suggest to send an email to whatever contact you have for them and just say "Hi, I'm currently in review for X role, and wanted to let you know I'll be out of the country with limited email/mobile contact from X to Y dates. Please let me know if there's anything I can do either before or after to help facilitate my application process."

    That sounds like a good approach. I might put together something like that.

    However, its been over 4 weeks now since I applied. The advert is still up on a few job sites (incl their own), and I haven't heard anything one way or the other, so its not looking good atm.
