They're not the first university in the UK to do it.

Apparently the mortarboards being damaged had something to do with it also - the companies renting/supplying gowns and mortarboards were fed up with the damage.

What's to stop them doing it anyway? They're graduating, it's not like they can get detention.

I think there should be a definition on the use of injury. Boo Boos, slight scrapes and slightly reddened skin shouldn't count as an "injury".

Careful now, you might have your eye out

They should really look into banning facepalms at this stage

"But students could have a mortarboard added digitally to photographs afterwards - for £8."

Ban something then charge for the reinstatement of an inferior equivalent. Probably an artificial monopoly too, eh?

One student needed stitches after it years ago, apparently. Sounds more like it was fizzed right at them rather than falling from the sky.

Yale was sued for the same reason more than 30 years ago, but successfully defended iself.

It's an 'unacceptable risk' aparently.... Has there been a raft of lawsuits from 1 eye'd arts graduates lately?(I'm guessing the BSC crowd have some basic understanding of gravity) Are we sick of reading endless articles about students injured by mortar boards with the same frequency they loose fingers to fireworks?

I think not, what are the odds of sombody getting injured, has it ever happened? A quick google isn't telling me that it has with any kind of frequency that constitutes an 'unacceptable risk'. If an 100 milion to one risk counts as unacceptable these days none of us is getting out of bed in the moring.....

You can't do that either. It poses an injury risk.

No one was throwing anything but shapes at my graduation.
