    Preview (© www.theroar.com.au):
At 227 kilometres in length, Stage 11 will be a long affair for both the riders and spectators. However, with a sting in the final 20 kilometres, this stage is not as easy as it looks on paper.

The riders start from the city of Modena and travel 170 kilometres without any real obstacles, with the only two interesting points being two intermediate sprint points, in Grisignano di Zocco (145 kilometres) and Villa del Conte (167 kilometres).

The last 50 kilometres or so is where the excitement grows as the riders slowly face a gradual rise, before the at 23 kilometres to go mark where a punishing, category four climb of three kilometres at eight per cent, with ramps of up to 15 per cent near the top kicks in.

Off the climb is a technical descent, before undulating roads into the final five kilometres, where we hit the final difficulty on the race route, a 1.5-kilometre climb of seven per cent before a short dash down into the finish in Asolo.

It’s a stage where the breakaway could take the glory, or a rider attacking on one of the two final climbs taking the spoils. However, the punchy sprinters will do all they can to keep the race together in the final 20 kilometres for a reduced bunch kick.

Watch out for potential general classification riders to attack coming into the finish, as those slopes are steep enough to hurt even the best of climbers.

My prediction is for a breakaway win. A rider like Tim Wellens or Adam Hansen for Lotto-Soudal are the perfect riders to take the win.

Preview on Podium Cafe with some good photos of the climbs near the finish. It should be far too tough for the sprinters. Also they are very much tipping Enrico Battaglin for the win.
Enrico Battaglin. Local boy Battaglin should know these roads like the back of his hand, and his fifth place on stage 7 shows he's on good form.

I've bet on Battaglin for every stage that was even remotely suitable so I really hope he does it.

It looks like the breakaway for the day has finally formed after 72 km.

Vegard Stake Laengen (IAM), Liam Bertazzo (Wilier Triestina-Southeast), and Anton Vorobyev (Katusha) have a lead of 5'42" with 146 km remaining.

The average speed for the first hour was 51.5 km/h!

Average speed after two hours of racing is 49.7 km/h. A lot of riders are going to suffer at the end of the stage.

The breakaway has a lead of 10'25" with 104 km remaining.

big crash there. What impact will that have

Massive pile-up here with Arnaud Demare going down and several other FDJ riders caught up. Leigh Howard was thrown down the grass banking and into a ditch, Evgeny Petrov is back on his feet but looks hurt. Meanwhile Michele Scarponi and Pieter Serry, two key domestiques for Astana and Etixx respectively, have been held up and now face a chase back on.

why on earth is Amador doing his turns on the front?

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 23,243 Mod ✭✭✭✭godtabh

Fair play to Jungles. Very good ride to key Pink

Saw it just from when Amador attacked. Great to see Jungels go all in with him. That's the kind of stuff at its best the Giro evokes for me: aggressive, off-the-cuff anarchic racing.
