fasten deck boards to concrete

    folks,

I have a small concrete patio area at the back of our house.

We've decided to make a deck on it. Could I just secure deck boards to the "patio" or would I really need to raise the deck boards off the patio?

I know the deck boards would do better with air circulation but wouldnt the rafters I use to raise equally need air circulating ?

    thanks

You are correct, the joists you would use also need to be kept off the ground, there is a product that allows for this.
I used them on my deck, however I suspect that your issue is build height up the house.

My deck is built on top of an old patio and is raised up on broken patio slabs and we used roof slates as shims to level certain areas. Worked perfectly!

yes, we are looking at about 4 inches to the bottom of the door (if even). I dont think its enough for joists and deck and with space beneath.

It's unlikely that your patio is as level as the decking should be so you may have to raise it up in a few spots.

L shaped galv brackets can be chemically anchored into the concrete, narrow joists can be used of reasonable thickness and then decking that is of reasonable depth can be used to get a build of less than 100mm height, it will be tight but doable, you may need to have smaller spaces between the joists to get more rigidity but thats not that big an issue.
