It would be impounded on suspicion of tax evasion. Irish residents have to register and pay tax on foreign cars as soon as they get them

If you live and work here, you need to drive a car with Irish plates.

Not strictly true. A non-resident can live and work here for up to 12 months and use a car registered in their main country of residence.

I think there is a grace period of 30 days if you have moved from UK to Ireland and imported the Uk vehicle.
Thats said I know Customs and Excise(Revenue) can hit you with a hefty V.R.T. bill if you fail to change over to Irish plates.

They could technically seize the car if you keep driving on UK plates in ROI if you do not register after 30 days of importing, plus your resident here in ROI now so best you get Irish plates.

I dont think you can tax your car if its still on UK plates. After 2 months with no car tax the AGS can seize it.

Just wondering why you would want to ?

Is there any benefit to be had from having English plates on a car ?

    ^^^
    Cheaper motor tax.
    No payment of VRT.

Cheaper car to buy, better spec, cheaper tax, possibly cheaper insurance, no VRT.

Just the minor downside of probably being stopped at a checkpoint and having your car removed from you, then having to pay VRT and the fines for non payment of VRT to get your car back.
