No sign of my registration cert after five weeks

I bought a second hand car on 12 April. As of now, I haven't received the registration certificate. The dealer insists he sent it off to Shannon or wherever it goes.

Someone I know bought a car in December and had the cert within ten days.

Has anyone experienced this sort of delay recently?

Also, if I don't receive the cert, is my only option to treat it as a lost cert? Since the registration office will not communicate by phone, email or post, I'm relying on their online FAQ and this is all I can fine that's close to my situation. If I'm using the lost cert procedure, how do I prove ownership?

    Thanks for any help.

Check on Vehicle Transaction Enquiry on motortax.ie, it will say if it has been issued or received.

in most cases its the dealer not actually having or sending off the cert thats the issue.

when I sold cars, I sent off hundreds of changes of ownership. never had one single issue.

If you put the reg into motortax.ie I pretty much guarantee that you won't see anything about it being purchased by a dealer in the last 3 months. If the garage was doing their paperwork properly you'd see this. (unless the car was in stock earlier than that)

Thanks for that - did't know about it. Checked - "No Vehicle Registration Certificate issued in the last 3 months". I suppose that tells me what I know, though.

It seems that's tyhe case - dealer hasn't sent it. It says the dealer bought it in March. No transactions after that.

Is the Lost Cert procedure my only option now?

No contact the dealer, they most likely either forgot to send it in or are waiting from the cert from whoever traded the car in.

Unfortunately I've contacted the gentleman a few times - he just says, "I sent it off on the day you bought it."

You need him to get a replacement cert.

    There is another way, though.

If you are not named as the owner on the Vehicle Registration Certificate (if the seller didn't send off the VRC for example) and there is no contact with the seller/registered owner, there is a process in place to obtain a new VRC

The new owner must submit the Statutory Declaration Form to the Department of Transport, Shannon, Co. Clare.

The Declaration includes garage certified details and the sworn date of purchase can be used as the date from which the tax is to be charged,

    no Garda stamp is required.
    No Rf134 is required.

Statutory Declarations can be witnessed by a commissioner for Oaths, Notary Public/Practising Solicitor or Peace Commissioner.

prove payment with receipt go back to dealer and ask him to request a new cert and send it off again
did you do a motor check

The replacement cert would go to the previous owner rather than the dealer.

OP did you actually sign the logbook?

Not if the car is in the dealer's garage code.

It's a while since I did them, but back when I did it used to go to the previous owner, maybe it's different now.

I'd put money on the dealer not getting it from the previous owner and doesn't want to bother getting from them and is just fobbing the new owner off so that they go sort it themselves.

If the Op runs up a few perking tickets, the previous owner won't be long getting on his/her bike:D
