Bought a 03 Avensis petrol, after a few days the engine management light came on, brought it back he tried to fob me off but eventually took it back for a look, light was for a cat not working properly, he got his garage to look into it and said it was a loose wire.....now the light is gone but the petrol consumption has gone to pieces, can another garage verify if proper work was done or if they just deactivated the light?

When you start car, does EML come on for a few seconds?

Yeh then knocks off, when I half turn the ignition all the lights stay on bar the engine.

That's normal - hence the light has not been messed with.

Now about your MPG, start measuring the consumption.
Check tyre pressure and google more ways to increase fuel efficiency.

1.6 Avensis is heavy enough on fuel either way. Is it possible that you started with a full tank? The first third of the tank takes as long to get through as the other 2/3 according to the gauge.

Its a 1.8 t3x petrol, seemed a lot better on petrol before he got his hands on it, tyre pressure is normal too, I fill the tank every top up, it seems every journey I take even a small one it depletes a lot more than before.

have you been making note of miles travelled vs litres used?
    What's the trip computer saying?

At the moment its saying 37mpg but doesn't feel like it.

Use the brimming method, everything else is just guessing

Every time you fill up, record litres used and kms driven.
