There was a replacement heifer sale in Roscommon on Friday night and one in Ballybay six weeks ago. Anyone at either of these?

1370 to 1650 was the report back from ballybay . No real exceptional stock at it I was told.

Fairly exceptional prices then if as I think we are talking 420ish kilo bulling heifers. Surely the upper end are in calf?

No all scanned not in calf but suitable for breeding.

I presume that these were 4* or 5* rated for BDGP. Good money made on them so.

These sales are never a true reflection of the animals being sold, all 4&5 star yes but when you get a large bunch of replacements like that together they usually go 2-300 more than they would on an average day.

Have seen that at clearance sales and special sales of all sorts with years alright.

There was one of these sales in Castleisland Wednesday, 77 heifers and to my mind trade was pretty poor.
I'd a 5 star AUxLM heifer there 430kgs and she only made 1025, it was good enough compared to other prices but very few made the prices mentioned above.

lots of sellers but few enough buyers first 15 or so lots were part cross heifers all around the 400kg mark and averages around 900.

best prices were for 4 or 5 big white CH heifers but I wouldn't say they were bought for breeding 500kgs and the made the 1400 mark.

alot of Saler weanlings there that had lots of stars but were very poor cattle all feb/mar 15 and only weighed 240kgs ish making 500 to 600 euro.

Bought a 310kg 5 star LM one myself for 780 as I've 4 or 5 more at home the same age that I plan on AI'ing and selling as autumn calvers next year.

Too late in the year now for breeding sales and to be fair a breeding sale shouldn't have 300 kilo heifers in it. There needs to be someone inspecting and ensuring a certain level of quality.
