ITB/Bursitis

Physio has diagnosed me with this!

I had trained hard this year and started racing in some local club races. About 6 weeks ago I got on the turbo for the first time in about 6 months, I did a few 30 min cadence sessions over the period of a few days. All my training had been outside on the winter bike. I got back on the winter bike a few days later and felt a pain down the left side of my knee. I gave it a rest for a week and went back out again and it was worse. Went to the physio, who is a knee specialist and a cyclist, and he has diagnosed it as ITB or Bursitis and that more than likely the turbo bike has triggered a bit of pain. So he told me to rest it and I can keep myself fit by going back to boxing for the next while. Went out yesterday for the first time in weeks after resting it and it was no better. After 10 very gentle miles I could feel my knee wasn't right and that it was just about to get sore at any moment.

The big problem is I am going to France in July for a week of cycling around Morzine! I am really starting to think that I am not going to be able to cycle! I will have to stay in the chalet while all the other lads go out on their bikes. I have two months left before we fly out and I haven't done the training plus my knee doesnt seem to be getting better at all.

I have been icing it, stretching more, getting massages. What else can I do? Anyone had this before? I have read some horror stories of it taking up to a year to heal and all some people being plagued with it on and off for years. Give me some hope of cycling in France please.

Are you 100% satisfied that the bike fit is correct especially cleat alignment?

The turbo bike is obviously not correct as this is more than likely the bike that brought on the problem, I've never had that bike fitted before. My other bikes are spot on I think. I've done thousands of miles on them and never had knee issues before.

All I can suggest is a little perspective & in the long run what happens this July is pretty insignificant. Walking in water like the aul' fellas in the swimming pools or the sea at a guess is maybe the best thing beyond rest. I'd say don't worry about trying to push its rehabilitation towards a deadline though - that's probably far from the wisest attitude. Hiring a moped for instance could still make for a very pleasant week around Morzine. It's not like you'd be stuck in a dump with only the cycling to rescue the week.

OP, you say your physio is a cyclist - would imagine they are well placed to advise you further
