Immersion Thermostat

A few weeks ago our Immersion timer stopped working and so I noticed that the immersion fixture on the hot water cylinder has no thermostat or 'cap' to cover it and instead was covered up with duct tape.

We had an electrician out to replace the immersion timer and he said that the duct tape was fine, that it was a cosmetic issue.

However, as I have since been investigating and researching the odd plumbing in our house I now know that we should have a cylinder thermostat and that the immersion heater element looks quite old also. And duct tape just doesn't seem good...!

The plumber who was out installing a shower pump for us [see other thread] said he could install a thermostat and new element for €180.

Should we get a new cylinder while we're at it? And does this price seem reasonable?

The immersion element will most likely have a thermostat built in, normally it's under a cover which should need tools to remove, as there are live terminals under it. Can you post a picture of what you are concerned about?

If there was no thermostat fitted, the cylinder would eventually boil when the immersion is left on.

You should be able to get a New element supplied and fitted for around 130 Euro
