bird id help

i saw a glimpse of the back of a bird flying into a hedge near baldonnell aerodrome in dublin. id be fairly decent at naming most birds from a distance. but this was about the size of a blackbird. it was the real bright red that caught my eye, it was the red around the edge mainly, not completely. ive spotted jays, bullfinches which would be close in size, but im sure it was neither of these. the red was striking. any ideas lads?

good shout, but too small, much bigger than a robin. just googled woodpecker, that seems possible. plenty of red in these images

There was one spotted in Kilakee,which is only about 13 km away,so it's possible.
