I'm looking to get an e92 320 coupe. Just reading online and there's all sorts of conflicting info, what's the general consensus on the more reliable and better engine, the 2 litre the petrol or diesel version?

And if its the petrol, is 35mpg on the motorway a reasonable expectation?

    I have the e92 320d (2997).
Economy is 50mpg easily as I do some motorway driving every day.
One thing to watch out for is the e92 diesel 2litre models came with the troublesome N47 engine which has the timing belt issue. Costs between 2-6k to fix depending on whether it has failed or not.
Mine had all 3 chains done so no worries on that side for me but they are pretty rare though (ones that have had the chains upgraded etc).
I know the petrol versions can hit 30-35mpg depending on engine size.
The 2l petrol should hit 35mpg on the motorway no problem I reckon.
I'm changing jobs next month and my commute is reduced from 150km to 40 a day so looking to get back into a petrol e92 especially a 335i if I can find a nice enough one.

are you doing mostly motorway driving? the mpg of the four cylinder may not be better if that is the case. My brothers 2001 530 auto is better on fuel than my 325 at motorway speeds...

the 6 cylinders are decent bit more poke, much nicer than 4 pot and like I said, fuel difference may be negligible...

Ye my commute is 35kms each way nearly all motorway. Reading a bit more it seems the petrol is full of problems. If the chain has been replaced on the 320d is the problem sorted or do you have to constantly worry about it?

no if its been upgraded then you're sorted and no need to worry about it.
It was the only way I'd go for a bmw with this engine..too risky otherwise.
Sure the fallout is low but I know of several people that it has happened too and they were talking 3-6k to fix.

Id get one with the chain done then, couldnt be worrying about that breaking.

Other than that the 320d is a decent car? Any other major issues?

I love it really...I was actually surprised at the power in the 2l.
My previous car was a 3litre 525D which I loved..but the coupe is slightly faster than it due to the less weight..and sturdier on the road due to its smaller size.
Its in the garage at the moment as some dumb bitch cut across me a few weeks ago and I need a new bumper and light which is covered under her insurance so I'm stuck in the jeep for a few days..yuck!!!
Once you go bmw or that level it's very hard to go down.
I'm debating whether to pick up a 335i and sell my 320d or sell both jeep and car and get a 162 mondeo.
when you add in costs of both cars vs the new one they're pretty similiar but still it's a ford :( I know in my heart and soul I'd miss the beemer.
