Best network for gate opener

GSM gate opener, if requested by the user, it sends texts, but doesn't make calls as such, and I have a vague memory that some of the networks will remove a number from service if it's not being used for outgoing calls. Most of the calls to the device are incoming activation calls, which are rejected by the unit so there's no call cost to the originator.

    So, several questions,

does an outgoing text keep the number alive?

which network offers the best rates for a sim for use in this situation?

Do any of the networks offer a contract sim for this type of service, or is PAYG a better option, with the requirement then being for the user to remember to top up or otherwise keep the sim alive on a regular basis?

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁
