Glare on windshield, 5 separate cars

I recently got a new car and the glare on it at night is a nightmare. Any light looks like a rope light coming towards me. It is amazingly difficult to see at night in the car. I've noticed that the windshield has streaks in the shape of the windshield wiper that I can't remove and it almost looks like a film on it too.

However, i have noticed that the same issue is starting to happen with 4 other cars i have being in owned by friends/family.

I have tried various glass cleaners/polishers/ and any solution i could find online with no avail. Is anyone else noticing this with their car? It cannot be the wiper blades as they are brand new on my car.

Maybe it's time for your trip to Specsavers?

Not being smart, but how is your vision?
Sensitivity to glare can be a symptom of e.g. early Cataracts..
Have your friends / family complained about the problem in their own cars?

Do you wipe the inside of the glass when driving? With hands / demister pads etc? Is the problem on the inside or out? If it's out, maybe try a different windscreen washing fluid.

I do wear glasses but the other car owners do not and they notice it too.

The problem is on the outside, if you look really close to the glass you can see that the windshield has streaks in the shape of the windshield wiper, i can't pick it up on a camera though.

OP said there are brand new blades!

Is it a brand new car though?

Most likely it is scratches on the outside which is caused over time by wipers (hence the wiper blade shape).

Could be a a film on the outside such as road film build up or it could also actually be on the inside aswell from nicotine or "vinyl fog" build up.

Polish the windows as opposed to cleaning them and believe it or not but chrome polish is the best way to clean glass, not glass polish!

Its a 2006 Civic, Im not saying its the wipers but I find it weird that its happening on 4 other cars (both front and back windows) during the same period.

Ive bought a small bottle from a car garage, i cannot remember its name but it came in a small bottle and was a green colour. But I have only added water to the car since

Try a new screenwash, water on its own is useless.

Ill try, but honestly I don't see how adding screen wash would fix the problem where hours of cleaning and buffing the glass trying o get the marks off the glass has not worked.

If it's happening to other cars it's possibly dust in the air combined with microscopic scratches, scratches gather from wipers over time anyway but dust can increase these.

I suggest you clean and then polish the windows and add a decent window wash for the reservoir also and see if you notice a difference.

Do the inside also as vinyl fog is common when the weather is warm.

Has the inside of the screen been cleaned? There is probably a film of dirt on the inside purely from the outside air being blown on it by the fan when you are demisting the screen. It's hard to tell but it looks dirty on the top photo.

I don't know why people are saying that it's an issue with the OP's vision. A lot of windscreens can suffer from damage caused by grit being dragged across the screen by wiper blades.

OP what you need to do is bring the car to a detailer and ask him to remove the damage on the windscreen using CarPro Ceriglass and a rayon polishing pad and finish off the job by applying Gtechniq G1 or CarPro FlyBy Forte to the windscreen. The reason for this is that the polishing removes the scratches but also the "beading" ability of the screen. These products give back the ability and increase it 100%.

What are you using to clean/buff the glass?

    That's a costly exercise MM.

Not that costly really considering you're not without your car for a full day and don't have the hassle of going through your insurance company to have a new windscreen fitted.

As a detailer who offers this service, I already have the Ceriglass and G1. I'm not charging for a full bottle of each.

Try a new screenwash, water on its own is useless.

Indeed. Microbial nastiness reduction is enough reason to add the screenwash, never mind the proper cleaning.

Be difficult to say how much of the stuff in those stills is due to windscreen or lens/sensor.

I have similar issue in my car but it's old and the windscreen isn't perfect any more.

Its all from the windshield, when I used the dash cam in the previous car there where no signs of glare.

Each detailer would have his own price. I charge €50.

What brand are the wipers? Like tyres there are good and bad and people who buy cheap insist they are good.

That's a good price. I was factoring in a fly by forte kit @ €40. Do you fancy doing my screen in LK?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,004 ✭✭✭ironclaw

Empty out your screenwash, flush with water and give your windscreen a good scrub. I ran short one time and used a bottle from Topaz, and another time from Applegreen (Basically the same stuff) and it destroyed the windscreen with smears. If you look closely, you can see it binding with the dust and road grease, and gunking the wipers. When I changed back to my usual branded wash, the problem quickly subsided. Likewise, I've found over concentration of dilute wash can cause the same issues. If you can't get wash, a weak solution of neat alcohol and vinegar can get your by.

Do you have anti glare coating on your glasses ?

As I said, the products are already there so I wouldn't be buying a full kit per car.

    PM sent.

OP's glasses are hardly a problem if the glare can be seen on camera!

You either need better wiper blades or a good cleaning.
