Hi all, got a tooth removed today and really regretting not getting a root canal done instead. So I'm wondering if a tooth implant is an option now? Don't know anything about them. Just looking for advice mainly. Thanks

I had a tooth (molar) pulled at beginning of last year (split in two so had to come out). My dentist sent me in too a tooth implant specialist (don't think I can name him here), comes to Limerick from Dublin monthly.

He advised it had to be left for a while for the bone to heal and close up in the socket and then he put an implant I think it was about 3 months later. That had to be let root into the bone before the cap was put on. All told about 9 months it took, was very painless to what I expected and I'm delighted with it. Cost was 2.4k total in case you are wondering.

I didn't think it was going to be that expensive, however it seems like it's worth it. My tooth that I got taken out was a back tooth. So I'm in two minds to get it done...

I got an implant quote today in Sligo for €2800. Got a quote last week in Galway for €2300. I'd recommend getting some quotes as prices can differ.

Swayed to the Galway option too as my health insurer covers 10% cost. I'll also get 20% through tax.

PM if you want to know more about the quotes I got.

You can get tax back on the crown portion, I think I got 200 or so back. I'm sure it can be done cheaper but I went with what my dentist recommended. When it comes to my health I don't do cheap :)

I had it done because I found with the tooth missing (it's the front molar on upper left side), I kept stabbing my gum when chewing with hard food items, even corn flakes were irritating as hell.

For me, it was well worth the money and I'm well happy I had it done. But it was pricey.. and I'm sure the crown will have to be replaced at some stage.

    From the orthodontist themselves?

Nope, you pay, then you'll get a med 2 form which you use to claim back from revenue.

If you are on paye anytime (on revenue.ie) you can do it there

Also would an implant be the last resort? I was offered a root canal, but what put me off that was there is a 4/5 chance it would work.. However looking back I regret not getting the root canal done now..

Really depends on a lot of things.

I've had 2 RCs, I think its best to keep the teeth there rather than replace, however if the tooth is gone then an implant is the best option.

Fitz or OS can give a more definitive answer tbh

I have been to a specialist in Dublin ( I live in the west - went to dublin on a recommendation ) & got quoted €5,900 for 2 upper molar implants.

I am just starting to price around but from what I have read there seems to be variants of the type of implants used, their quality etc.

Any advice would be much appreciated.
