Changing two cars. need towing car and commuter

Husband and I both have ten year old cars. I have a commercial sorento which is used for towing horseboxes and water trailers through fields, dogs in the back. Shopping runs. Not much in the way of long distance driving. Husband has c220 which is lovely but tax is steep and he could probably do better on economy. So we are thinking of changing to one good big car that can do everything and a commuter.

I took a Volvo xc60 for a test drive. Dealer reckoned we would struggle to get it in all wheel drive. (maybe we don't need it, sorento isn't worth much now and could be kept as farm vehicle maybe). We'd still need to tow maybe ten times a year - sometimes long trips. About two tons of a load. Is it up to the job? I really liked the car. I'm reluctant to go for full size 4x4.

And what could we look at for commuter? I think golfs are overpriced but something along those lines would be good. He does about 60 km of a commute and often another 20 on top of that.

So are you looking at 2 brand new cars? What budget do you have for each or total?

From me reading it my understanding is that the OP wants to trade the Merc C Class for something that can occasionally tow a 2 tone trailer but will keep the Sorrento for farm work only.

I don't think a Golf size car would pull 2 tons.

Sorry for confusion. We are looking for two cars. Not buying brand new. Want a big do everything car to replace sorento and an economical commuter to replace merc. Sorento will be taken off road if we keep it.

    Toyota Rav4?

Not sure about new model rav4 but older models were nothing but trouble. Wouldn't be very interested in it as a result.

(I sort of fell for the xc60 anyway. Might go to uk to get a good one if the numbers make sense.)

    What trouble would that be?

Cant remember exactly. Was it drivetrain or something? Well known issue with one model. Family member had one and put us all off.
