Hi.My sister is looking at a current generation Auris with a 1.33 petrol engine. Had a spin in it, seems to have a decent turn of power.I don't know anything about this engine. But from reading I think they have been out in the Uk at least since 2009, so I'd imagine there should be some history on them. Anyone experience with them. Whats economy and tax like. Do they have any fancy stuff on them like other modern small petrols that may have potential for problems. any known issues?

I had an urban cruiser with that engine and found it quite economical. The few people I met through work with 1.33 Yariss to said they were as economical as the 1.0.
They're certainly a lot more economical than the older 1.4 VVT-i engine. They have stop-start which is the only thing I don't like.
They're supposed to be a very robust engine. A lot less complicated than turbocharged petrols.

My father has a 2009 Auris 1.33 litre imported from the UK, for the last 5 years. Car hasn't given any hassle in that time, only outlay has been tyres, NCT and regular servicing. Nothing special around servicing either and he is happy enough with the power from it. Cannot judge it on mpg as he only does about 5k km per year and most of that is just around town. I've driven it myself a few times but I'm not the best person to ask either as I find it sluggish coming from a diesel with nearly twice the bhp and more torque so really depends on what your coming from.

Motor tax on the 1.33 litre is €280. The old 1.4 litre was sold here right up until the Auris got a facelift in 2010. The 1.4 litre also had higher motor tax on the new system.

Thanks guys.sounds like it will suit her fine.she's coming from a very verh sluggish last model 1.4 astra. This is a power house in comparison. Its low mileage, full history, with lots of the 5 year warrenty left. I take it that its a chain on these. No horror stories to report Colm?

Bazz. I take it one your father has is the 1st generation. Does the 1.33 manage to make a decent car of it?

Is it a uk model, you mention 5 year warranty
    Yeah, it's a timing chain.

Yep UK model via an auto dealer. TBH while it is high spec, I didn't notice the start/stop. Maybe you have to knock it out of gear or something for a period before it kicks in.

car has to be in neutral with cluth not pressed. doesn't do it when engine is cold.

Yes it's a first generation pre facelift model. I'm probably the wrong person to ask about how good the engine is as I haven't driven anything similar to it for comparison. What I do know is that it has been trouble free for the last 5 years and does exactly what is says on the tin.

is it not a facelift original model if it's 1.33? clear rear indicators?

Nope, the introduced the 1.33 litre engine in the pre facelifted model in the UK back in 2009. Toyota still had a load of old 1.4 litre ones left unsold here due to the tax change so they held off bringing in the 1.33 litre here until the facelift.

Thanks guys. I thought I had updated this thread. She got a 2014 Auris 1.33 UK spec car shortly after this. Very happy with the car and with the economy so far. No official figures, just that she is getting better than the 2010 1.4 Astra she had.

Thinking of taking the plunge myself now on a new model (2013/2014) Auris now that the sterling is at a good rate. I've kind of came to the conclusion of the Auris as it gives a decent mpg and seems pretty economical and all this from a petrol without turbo (most other alternatives seem to use turbos now). Also doesn't have a DPF or DMF to worry about. Should also be pretty reliable in the long term. I've had Toyota's before and they have been very reliable. Parts hould be easily got and most can repair them.

Another option jumping out at me is the hybrid version, which seem to be resonable enough to buy in the UK compared with a prius. But from reading on the net it seems that most people don't get anywhere near the mpg claimed. So it may work out not much more expensive to run the 1.33 dual vvti?

Guess it's a case of overall cost of ownership and not simply mpg. Some may give better mpg, but cost more in repairs or more initial outlay that you'll never recoup on fuel difference over the lifetime of the car.

My wife would drive it daily and does about 40k a day during the week on A and B roads, a few short runs at the weekend and the few long journey per year.

Anyone experience of the 1.33 or hybrid good or bad?

Would the mpg in the hybrid trump the 1.33?

    1.4d4d anyone?

Anything else that should be considered?
