Couple of years old thread but rather than start a new one...

I assume these vans can zap you while you are driving away from them? I've seen notices of the rear number plate. I guess that's legit ??

    You assume correctly.

Camera and radar unit look out the back window.

It'll take a photo of the front of the car as you approach the rear window, and if you are traveling the other direction it will take a photo and speed reading of the back of your car.

    All legit

    Moved out from old thread

And answer is yes, but it depends. Where was this? How was van positioned?

Thanks for new thread Biko. I think van was parked on opposite side of road facing in correct way, so camera was out the back. I thought the guns used were based on sending a signal out to an oncoming car and it bounces back and that's how the speed is calculated, does it work in the same manner if a car is travelling away from the van?

    Doppler effect

    That's how it works

They can only take a speed measurement from the back, that's where the equipment is.

I think it's either laser or radar that needs to be directed towards a target and the system will take a snap if you're over the configured limit.

I don't believe there's any speed or camera equipment in the front of the vans. Only the back window.

I think so too but just wondered if they could get your speed as you travel AWAY from the van on opposite side of the road

The speed camera points out the rear window. Usally covers the whole width of a single carriage way road. Can pick up speed of vehicles travelling towards the rear window, and away from the rear window. To put it simply, yes it can detect and issue notices, for vehicles travelling in both directions.

    Just google Doppler effect.

The radar beam changes freq when it bounces off the moving car.

The speed is calculated from the changes in freq.
The old grey gatsos on a pole used to take readings from the back of a car.

If a car is approaching, the freq increases, and if the car is receiding the freq reduces.
The radar gun calculates the chance in freq and gives a + or - reading.

Ie if a car is approaching at 100km/h, it'll read +100,
And if receiding it'll read -100km/h.

And should this be represented on the ticket or can they just state " you were doing 60 in a 50" blah blah?

The +/- is shown on the full photo

It only proves that you were approaching or receding.

Its the same with the hand held laser guns that the cops use.

    + for approaching
    - for going away.

You could try being pedantic, and arguing with the judge that you were traveling back in time.

Don't think it'll cut the mustard

Curiosity, can they cover both side of a 6 lane dual carriageway with middle divider ?
    like https://goo.gl/maps/LvqDswAfkUw

Would a van on the other side of the divider be able to read up to that lane ?

as I understand it, no action is taken if there is 2 or more cars in the picture, is that correct?

Anyone else give a beep hello to the Go Safe operator inside as you pass?
Apparently if you do it when you're right alongside the van they appreciate the friendly gesture the most.
