Does it have to be diesel and small? Personally I think if your doing enough miles for diesel then I'd want something a bit bigger and more comfortable than a supermini like a Fiesta, Polo, etc.

i see your point, but budget is as above, would something bigger cost more?

how about the New Mazda 3 ? its a beauty . and mazdas are pretty bullet proof . might be slightly above budget around 22 new i think

heres a pic of the hatchback in soul red and saloon in Titanium flash

my father still has a run about 1998 mazda 323 with 400k + miles running perfectly

The diesel ones aren't. For long term ownership I'd avoid a mazda, even a petrol one as they are prone to rust. It remains to be seen how the new 3 is in this regard but going by all previous generations and the last 323 I wouldn't be too optimistic.

Are parts and service expensive too for Mazdas? Had that reputation formerly.

Does it have to be brand new?

One year old Corolla diesel here with small mileage within budget:

Low running costs and rarely give any issues.

How about a Hyundai i20 or a Kia Rio both very good cars that are well built should be well within your budget and should last many years. A Mazda 2 is another option and a Honda Jazz

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Genuine parts are still very expensive for them afaik.

If you plan on keeping the car a long time I don't see what difference a year makes tbh.

That corolla bazz posted is only a year old and is Luna spec, the highest you can get on the corolla. A new one for around 20k will only be a basic Terra model.

Mazdas are, imo, really nice things to drive, specially the latest gen. One thing worth noting though is that they're more expensive to insure than their European counterpart.

It is probably costs one will save elsewhere though, like not having to change the timing belt (as it's a chain in the skyactive petrol).

I'd sooner have a corolla or a civic over one if keeping the car long term.

Agreed. Still see old civics and corollas from the early 90s and feck all mazdas but they're still not too bad of a car. I'd just stay clear of the diesels.
