If you think new is dear, wait till you see second hand:)

List prices of JDs, MFs and NHs for 100hp + loader are around 60k+.

Prices of same but 5 year old, c.5k hours on the clock are around 50k for one in good condition.

Claas Ares 340 ax came in at around 45k new with a very good finance package.

Zetor would be in that ballpark also.

Do you want 4wd or 2wd, loader or not, what work will it be doing, what kind of ballpark money are you looking at spending?

40-45k seems pricey for topping and rolling?

As Jim above says, do you need a new or nearly new tractor for that kind of work?

Not criticising your choices, btw, just for relatively light work, would an older tractor do the work for a lot less outlay?

Feic it ,at that price,I think i'd buy a budget kramer loader, and pay someone else to top-roll and fertilize, (or buy a budget tractor too)

My thinking is that it will be keeping it for 15 years or so as it won't be over used with heavy work and I am gud at minding thinks also I would be willing to stretch back to 2010

How much of a tax saving would there be on a new tractor at 60k when it's depreciated over 7 years as a matter of interest lads?

Is the girl friend in the high tax band??:p

Depreciation would be 9k a year for the first 6 years and 6k for the 7th year, if you trade it in then you need a 'creative' accountant.
If you took out a loan, the interest would be allowable as well.

I'm trying to figure out how a few lads justify it, no high tax rate around here blue only poverty.

I suppose if someone was in the high tax band the 60k tractor would be costing them around 30k, not too many farmers round here in the high tax band this year either LC. Getting the VAT back would be another possibility too.

Still 40 grand plus a loader with questionable resale value in 5 or 10 years when you want to trade it in.
Although at least with the internet you'll be able to source parts no matter what happens with the irish distributors..

I am in the high tax bracket and I cannot justify that money on a tractor. The depreciation term is 8 years I thaught so on 50K it is 6250/year. However you cannot get USC back from outside employment and I am not sure about PRSI I think it is tax only so 40% not 50%.

On VAT you lose Vat on cattle sales and most other vat invoices are reclaimable on buildings etc. After what the money is worth to you and if you have to borrow some in real terms the tractor will costs you 35K+.

For topping and rolling if on good land a 2WD tractor is adequate you would buy a flaking one for 20K. If I had 60K burning a hole in my pocket I be looking at some neighbours field

I was thinking more in terms of an ag contractor getting the vat back, or somebody with plant hire and a bit of farming on the side. What way does PRSI work with the off farm job and farming Bass?

You pay PRSI on profits. However when a loss is incurred I am not sure if you can get the PRSI claimed back as well as the Tax. USC is not reclaimable. Very few make money on VAT most contractors would give there eye teeth not to be vat registered. Yes you get the VAT back on fuel and machinery but you have to charge VAT on everything. As well if farming unless you are incorporated you lose VAT on farm sales

Talking to lad that was round baling and he reckoned that VAT was costing him a 50c/bale in real terms

A 165 would get you away without spending too much if need be and would do all of the above work. Or a case or same for 10k if you wanted a bit of comfort. Spending 40k seems a bit excessive to me for the kind of work you need it for.
