Toyota classic insurance

I am thinking of buying an old Toyota pre 1996 and was wondering what the rules around classic insurance are.

I was thinking a boxy starlet or corolla or something like that as I always wanted one. It will rarely be used maybe only once or twice a week for a quick run around. I have no other car insured atm and won't be using the car for commuting or anything like that.

Is it possible to insure something like this on a classic policy or does it have to be something exotic?

Also what kind of ballpark figures is classic car insurance and is there any other t&c's I should know about that aren't immediately obvious

The fact that you called it a boxy starlet means you have already pigeon holed yourself, so no insurance for you.

Your first major problem is you have no other car insured which is a no no for getting a classic policy. You would really need to have a daily driver insured before any company who sells classic policies will talk to you.

Your second major problem is old Toyotas. I recently took a notion to buy a 25 year old Starlet and despite the fact I have a regular policy, main car, am very old, etc etc, they didn't want to know. Told me Starlets were off limits for the underwriter.
I did meet a man who had an old Starlet on a classic policy with my own insurance company though so as ever, it's changeable like the weather. Plus, FBD did give me a fair quote for it so it is possible.

Main thing is, you need to have a daily driver insured. Since the likes of those Starlets are 25 plus years old now, you won't get a regular unlimited mileage policy on it either.

classic insurance isn't a gateway to cheap insurance, the insurance companies know all the angles.

Think of Classic Insurance as costing what a normal policy with full no claims would cost and you'll begin to understand why they insist you have a main policy. They also want to ensure as far as possible the car is not a daily driver.

You would also need to be something like 25 before you could get a policy, I suspect you may not be that old.

A mainstream policy may well be impossible to source as well btw.
