House of Cards has become rather silly but it's certainly worth a watch. Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright are excellent in it.

Have you seen the likes of The Wire, Mad Men, The Sopranos and Breaking Bad? They're the big hitters as far as I'm concerned. Definitely consider making a start on any of those that you haven't seen.

Deadwood is also very special. Don't be turned off by the Wild West setting. Great characters and good and nasty storylines.

The Shield is an over the top police procedural but it's surprisingly effective over its 7 seasons. The whole thing is essentially about crooked cops so right from the start the good guys are the bad guys. It's a nice dynamic that keeps you interested.

Boardwalk Empire is a Prohibition Era crime-drama that mixes up real life characters like Al Capone in a fictional setting. 5 seasons with big production values and a solid cast.

I think Ray Donovan is very good.

Have you seen Bates Motel? Very good.
Justified was brilliant. Orphan Black I love

Of all those shows I've only watched Breaking Bad and loved it. I currently watch The Walking Dead,Game of thrones, Banshee,Arrow,The Flash, Supergirl, Penny Dreadful, The Strain

I used to watch supernatural aswell but I've gotten sick of it, It was much better in the beginning as a Monster of the Week show, its gone on too long anyway

I was a big fan of prison break and 24 also, alot of turn your brain off TV there but most of all I love gripping TV

The Tunnel very good well worth watching.

Marvels Agent of Shield well worth watching if you like that.

If you liked breaking bad, make sure to check out Better Call Saul. It's slow but a great character show that details the origins of Saul Goodman and other secondary characters, most notably Mike.

Billions is also worth a look if you enjoyed Wolf of wall street. It's not a spinoff but is the same idea starring Damien Lewis.

The Last Ship is a great action adventure in the vein of the 80s classics..

Other good shows worth checking out are Suits, The Shield, and Bosch.

Based on those shows some of what I've mentioned may not interest you, although that's just a wild guess. But I would still wholeheartedly recommend The Sopranos and The Wire. The latter can be quite slow moving at times, and could be considered an acquired taste, but The Sopranos hits the ground running. Breaking Bad is the only other show that was as consistently brilliant over its entire run.

Have you seen Better Call Saul, the Breaking Bad prequel about the crooked lawyer? The first two seasons are on Netflix. I was unsure about it at first because I thought BB was so good I didn't want it spoiled by anything else. But I've been pleasantly surprised by it. It's clearly for people that are familiar with BB but it's also its own thing.

Another one I've watched recently is Shades of Blue. Bit like the Shield in that it centres around a team of crooked cops and starring Jennifer Lopez (who is actually pretty good) and the always excellent Ray Liotta.

I just wasn't a fan of his character in breaking bad, I actually heard Fargo is very good. Homeland is another one that comes to mind. Of the ones you mentioned The Sopranoes and Deadwood seem to appeal the most

from looking at your current list defintely Agent Carter and Agents of Shield.
Justified and Battlestar Galactica are another 2 of the finest shows ever written.

Neither was I. I couldn't bring myself to watch it until about two weeks ago, but then I flew through it.

I loved Mike in BB and he plays a huge part here as well. In fact his story arc is my favourite thing about it.

Anyway, it may not be for you but don't be completely turned off by Saul.

Battlestar Galactica is fantastic. A mainstream science-fiction series that's essentially a critique of US foreign policy in the Middle-East. Brilliant TV.

Have you seen Mr Robot? Very good TV show

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37 Kev1001

    The Originals is excellent.

It is a spin-off from the Vampire Diaries. I never watched the Vampire Diaries.

The third season is some of the best TV I have watched.

Would also recommend Suits if you haven't seen it (season 3 and 4 are not great but season 5 makes up for it).

Always Sunny in philadelphia and the League are good comedy shows.

Rick and Morty is good animated tv.

Banshee is my favourite show although I think this season(its last) has been the worst so far, too much to go through for only 8 episodes

Have we all given up on Dexter?
I am watching most of the shows above but would throw in the West Wing as well as Dexter.

I think Homeland is giving GoT a run for its money. I thought the last season was fantastic, especially Claire Danes.

If you are a Michael Connelly fan then Bosch is the business. Titus Welliver nails it.

    Have we mentioned Narcos?

For this side of the atlantic, obviously after Love Hate, I would go for Luther, "Stringer Bell" aka Idris Elba is brilliant as the detective. Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in Sherlock is superb. Broadchurch is enthralling.

I think I need to stop here:D It's getting into system overload.

OP you mentioned you love gripping tv, couple of people have already mentioned The Shield, I would highly recommend that. Just recently finished a rewatch for about the 5th time and it's just as captivating since the first time.

The Shield is fantastic. From the opening episode to the finale it is just so rewatchable with some great season-long guest stars in the 4th and 5th season.

Definitely one of my all time favorites. I'd rate it above The Wire which takes much longer to get going and has a second season with a completely different tone.

I've watched all 3, they're all very enjoyable, particularly house of cards.

But for a binge I'd add House of Lies with Don Cheadle or if you've a strong stomach for hardship and desolation Oz, fantastic prison drama not for the faint hearted

I've often come across people comparing The Shield and The Wire but I'm not exactly sure why, except that they're both 'cop shows'.

If they were both movies then The Shield would be the slighty cheesy popcorn flick that puts bums on seats, whereas The Wire would be the celebrated film festival winner that not enough people will bother watching.

    They're just completely different shows.

For example, let's look at how they both handle corruption. The Shield treats it as pure entertainment. Corruption is just one of many contexts that allows the characters to do their thing. Double dealing, running and gunning, etc. On the other hand, The Wire looks at corruption at an institutional level, from the blue-collar dockers with good intentions right through to the corporate sharks flipping dodgy real estate, and everyone, from the school board to the kids on the low-rises, are all juking the numbers and looking out for themselves.

Similarly, look at racism throughout each show. The Shield has the likes of Shane spitting all sorts of racial epiteths, that in-your-face racism that we can all identify and disapprove of. But The Wire takes a different approach. I'm thinking about when D'Angelo takes his girl to a fancy (white) restaurant and they don't even know how to order food, or when Daniels is in the kitchen at a dinner party and just because he's black the chauffeurs think he's one of them, rather than being a high-ranking police officer.

Two fundamentally different shows both they're both brilliant.

I'd agree with that. I nearly feel it's a pity the prequel wasn't done around Mike instead of Saul.

Back on topic, The Night Manager, I thought was OK. Stars Hugh Laurie, though that's only one short season, so far at least.

The sopranos, the wire, game of thrones, rescue me, breaking bad, Narcos my all time favourites.

For comedy check out modern family. The x files, battlestar galactica, Chicago fire, Chicago PD, law and order, six feet under, the shield also very good. Mad men was good and I have a bit left in it my self. House of cards, the west wing 2 good political dramas.

Oz is a great show too but not for everyone it's as violent as game of thrones.

Couple of years viewing in there they all have multiple seasons.

I like the good wife, some interesting story lines, episodes do well to seem current with cases on things like drones, search engines, nsa whistle blowers, nsa spying, extrajudicial killings, sometimes funny, sometimes it's a bit light but mostly good

The Americans. In my opinion, this is the best show on TV right now. It's staggeringly under watched.

It revolves around the lives of a seemingly happily married yuppiesh couple in 1980s Washington DC, Philip and Elizabeth. They have it all: steady careers, a nice house and car and two wonderful children. But it's all a lie. In actual fact they are sleeper agents for the KGB, Russian born and bred, who are working as hard as they can to help undermine the efforts of Uncle Sam during a time of escalating tension in The Cold War. Their cover is so deep that even their kids have no idea that Ma and Pa are actually a pair of Ruskies.

The Americans does that thing that's common enough now, a la Breaking Bad, of forcing you to side with people who you know are doing terrible things for the wrong reasons. You watch our heroes lie, cheat, steal and kill in the name of a bankrupt ideology and you can't help it, you want them to get away with it. It also shows that people on both sides of a conflict can be as much trapped as protected by the systems they inhabit, a lot like The Wire did. And, like a show like Mad Men, it's excellently put together; each episode is well shot and assembled with care. The acting is top notch, from top to bottom.

It's midway through season 4 right now. Season 1 is a bit more bombastic and outlandish compared to what follows, but I can almost guarantee that if you can stick with it into season 2, well, then you'll be well and truly stuck. It's more of a slow burn paced kind of show: tension builds gradually. Having said that, its been getting more and more intense every season, as the lies and double crosses start to pile up and the walls seem to be closing in bit by bit... This current season in particular will have your nerves completely shot.

    Do you have Netflix?

Season 1 of Jane the Virgin is on there (Season 2 currently showing on e4), and is definitely worth checking out.

Good comedy. Warm characters. A bit ridiculous at times, but in a good way, I find.
