Hi. I picked my kids up from school today. When I was waiting for them i turned off the car but left the key in the ignition and let the passenger window down to chat with a neighbour (nothing unusual). The kids came out, I put their bags in the boot and jumped in myself. My son had put the passenger window up while i was at the boot.
I turned the key and it keep turning and turning and turning? I then noticed there were no lights what so ever on the dashboard. I took the key out and tried to lock and unlock the car but nothing. I got out of the car thinking the cause was that the boot might still be open. I tried to lock and unlock the door again and it worked. I got back into the car, started it as normal and drove away.
I have stopped and started the car several time since that and it is fine???
Its a 04 passat tiptronic 1.9 TDI (130bhp) the battery is about 4 years old. Last week i noticed the break switch is giving trouble but that's an easy fix but wonder has it anything to do with the problem?

Get it scanned for codes, whatever it is it will most likely have triggered a fault code, this will be a good place to start

Check for corrosion on the Negative battery cable, follow the cable down. That area is prone to water ingress and easily submerges the cable where it bolts to the body of the car, and does eventually cause some issues!?..
