I suppose it was only a matter of time, but this is really disappointing news if it comes to fruition.
John Whittingdale, the culture secretary, is to order the BBC to put password controls on the iPlayer, paving the way for the introduction of a separate subscription fee for the streaming service.

The government’s white paper on the future of the corporation, which will be published next month, is said to include plans to force users of the popular iPlayer to sign in before accessing the corporation’s television and radio programming, ensuring that those who do not pay the licence fee are excluded from the service.

Mr Whittingdale will also ask the BBC to trial additional subscription services via the iPlayer, allowing viewers to pay extra to access hit shows such as The Night Manager or The Great British Bake Off outside of the 30-day catch-up window, in which programmes are currently available for free.

Hopefully it doesn't get legs and they decide to abandon it when people stop using iPlayer. I'd rather they force us to watch ads or something instead.

Really hope it doesn't happen, as in you have to provide a license number to access it.

It makes sense to me in this new age of online TV. It's fairly ridiculous that by choosing to watch a TV show 'on demand' you avoid having to pay for it. To be honest, I can't really see the argument against a move like this.

My problem is that if you have a TV License (which I do) you don't have to pay for BBC iPlayer, but they're not gonna accept Irish TV License numbers, even though I can watch BBC shows on the television anyway already. I pay for a service that allows me to get around the region block on iPlayer, but I don't want to pay an extra fee on top of that. If I'm travelling down to Galway or anywhere outside of Dublin for work (which I do fairly regularly), I'd like to be able to watch the shows I usually watch while I'm on the road. If they were to remove the region block and allowed Irish TV License numbers, then I would'nt have a problem, but otherwise they can jog on.

Jog on? Wtf? Why the air of entitlement?

You're already using a 3rd party tool to gain access to a site that you shouldn't be accessing. And now you're pissed that there's going to be stronger measures in force to prevent you from doing so but with a potential paid subscription option instead?

What/who do you use to watch BBC on your TV?

Maybe this move will benefit you long term and you can stop paying for your vpn service or whatever you use?

a UK TV licence, the BBC get no funding from an Irish one.

As its ad free, I agree with it.
