Massey Ferguson 50 industrial

Hi, I am a new member here. I own a Massey Ferguson 50 Industrial from c. 1970. This is the model that preceded the famous MF 50b. I have it for over 20 years now and it has given great service My machine is a loader only with no backhoe. It has a normal gearbox transmission with a clutch and I am getting a little fed up with having to clutch every time I want to change direction. Does anyone know where I could get a torque transmission to replace the clutch. I think the MF description was "Instant Reverse Transmission". From memory there used to be a dealer in Laois/Carlow and someone in Wexford who used to specialise in the MF Industrials but I can't find anything about them on the internet. I would appreciate any information that would lead me to source one of these torque transmissions. I am based in Galway but distance does not bother me.

Do you use the MF50 as a tractor or just as a loader? Because replacing the standard transmission with the instant reverse transmission may have some unexpected side effects such as a PTO that reverses when tractor reverses and 3 point linkage not working when ideling.

Also while it is not a huge job to replace the transmission it may be more cost effective to trade in the loader for tourqe version.

Trade it in for a skid steer ! No regrets

That really would depend on his particular setup

I intend using it as a loader only and the convenience of the torque would be my priority even though in the past I have used the 3 point linkage and PTO I don't plan using them again.

Would you not have to change the whole gearbox?

Yes, gearbox, torque converter and fly wheel would need to be taken from a donar machine.

Probably foot plates too as pedal arrangement is different also.

Why bother on a 40 odd year old machine....if your at that you'd be as well check the packs etc in the new gearbox??

Surly a handy sized tractor/mini loading shovel would do??

I agree. See my first post.

Yes, I agree on the one hand that it is a very old machine to put this level of effort into but it runs like a watch, starts first tip every time and has absolutely no wear on the loader pins, steering, kingpins or front axle. I do accept that there is a risk with the replacement transmission & gearbox but if I could come across a servicable unit there is another lease of life in it.

Sounds like you have your mind made up. If going down that line you should probably get the clutch pack overhaul kit and replace the oil pump and torque converter drive hub.

If your lead above doesn't help then you might still get better value from buying a complete donar tractor and overhauling the transmission yourself, as you can sell it on with your old clutch transmission.
