I called up a well known plumbing suppliers and was told that legally they cannot give any help regarding a gas boiler or prices or any info.

I'm just looking for price on a Bosch combi boiler that would heat hot water and provide for the underfloor heating, and what it would cost.

Anybody know anything about this? Sounds bananas.

It's just to stop non gas reg guys from working on gas. Not sure why they wouldn't give u a price though

Depends on what he asked I suppose - answering a broad question might be seen as giving technical advice.

Asking for the price of a specific product might be different.

One particular merchant is getting very sticky about gas info and supplying parts. I have seen them several times refusing people who cannot show their card.

I'm not sure I can name the place, but I just wanted to know the price of a decent Bosch combi boiler that could run my underfloor heating, a 30kw. He said I'd have to contact a registered plumber for this. I don't really understand how this could work

I contacted Bosch, they said all their units were suitable for underfloor heating. Not sure how to size it, I think a 30kw would suit. 120sq/m footprint underfloor heating, with one bathroom (elec shower) and one en suite (shower from boiler)

Is this a new project you are looking at, or a replacement boiler for an existing system?

It's a new project. Gutting a house that doesn't have any heating system at the moment

Still no reason not to give out prices , it's entirely legal to buy gas equipment. It's the install that's controlled

It maybe legal to buy it, but maybe morally wrong to sell it to someone unregistered, this is why some suppliers choose not to.

Why. I would never let tradesmen sell me equipment on top of installation

So what would you do if your Gas Boiler was to break down and need a new component?

I got a manufacturers part over the internet and a registered gas installer fitted it ( not for me but for my mums place )

The whole plumbing trade is a rip-off, suppliers quote punters exaggerated retail for product a plumber buys wholesale, and then adds on an installation fee !!!!

The retail price is often 100% markup over the walk in wholesale price

100 % is quite exaggerated. Do you think you should be entitled to the same price as the time served qualified tradesman?

Having now re-plumbed three houses completely in my time to far better standards then seen in many houses , I genuinely regard myself as better then most time served tradesmen in this field

The markup is no exaggeration , I have regularly received 50 % discounts on certain plumbing items ( a 50 % discount being a 100% markup ) simply by building relationships and then buying at " trade"

The whole industry is designed to fool , mr or missus miggins who tries to verify a plumbers quote , retail prices are inflated , because the trade knows that Joe soap doesn't buy plumbing products as he cant install them, so the trade inflates retail prices so that it can give excessive trade discounts to plumbers . Any price comparison over the Internet or buying in the uk ( or further afield ) will demonstrate the real cost of many of these items.

I love the way u think you're better than most tradesmen based on your own rating . It's hilarious really.

Oh I wouldn't contemplate installing anything but I hear ya. It's just they specifically said it wouldn't be legal to even give me a price. Basically they specialise is sales and I'd like to know what's best before approaching a plumber, and know what it all costs from the sales side.

    Most! :D

Sh*t fellas can become qualified, no argument there. All it takes is to take care during the training period, then stop caring once they get their craft cert. But I can guarantee you that watching your plumber mate a few times, and topping it up with a few YouTube videos doesn't make you a better plumber than most time served tradesmen. You're still one of the cowboys.

If you'd like to know the best brands you can ask on here. If you plan on sourcing the materials yourself then that's perfectly Ok too. There's still plenty of places that sell gas parts to non Rgi.
    But....
When your boiler or motorised valve or pump or timeclock give trouble, and they will at some stage, you can't call your plumber expecting him to fix it

I am closing this thread, as argumentative and pointless.

Boatmad, trolling won't be tolerated on this site, see you in a week.
The disingenuous rip off plumbers you speak of give there time here free of charge to help people with genuine queries.

The gas industry is right not to sell to unregistered people and should be applauded for it.

    It's about SAFETY.

Wow, what a statement:pac:, thing is you don't know what you don't know so how do you know you know it better than those who know:D.

It's not the industry that's a miss with its rip off attitude it's the whole country but the difference with gas is it can be a very dangerous subject matter so the more levels of restrictions the better it's just a shame the increased level of restrictions that's designed to promote gas safety can be used to promote shop profits.
