Hi, does anybody know what the legal position in Ireland is about refusing to have a wi-fi meter installed in your home by a landlord?

What do you mean by Wifi Meter?

    Something for ESB? or Eir?

The LL can refuse to have anything installed that doesn't come under the minimum requirements listed under the legislation.

If it wasn't there when you viewed don't expect it to be put in. If you want some sort of fancy meter why not give the LL the amount required to put it back after you're gone. It's no guarantee but it might grease the wheels.

Wifi is not a part fo the minimum standard for rental accommodation (yet!) And mobile broadband requires no installation.

I'm renting the flat and although it hasn't come to it yet I don't want a pre-pay meter in my flat. I'm quiet happy paying my own bill as I have been for almost ten years. I don't like wi-fi either and I don't want it in my flat.

As Wi-Fi travels through walls, expect plenty of Wi-Fi from your neighbours.

I hope you don't have a microwave, a mobile phone or a modern remote control; and have made your flat in to a farady cage to prevent your neighbours 2.4Ghz signals getting in, then.

Haven't used a microwave in about 15 yrs, I switch the mobile phone off at night and put it in the kitchen. I get bad headaches if I'm close to wi-fi devices, if the meter was installed it would be close by me as my flat is a studio. I have actually looked into Faraday cages and specialised paint, bump on the tinfoil hat before somebody suggests it. I thought there might be some issues around having devices installed without your consent.

If you are electrosensitive to 2.4Ghz, the ~900Mhz of a smart meter won't affect you then.

I used to work as an ESB Meter reader, the only WiFi Meters were the ones in the likes of shops and business addresses...

There is no residential WiFi Meters that I am aware of....

Are you maybe thinking of a digital Meter with a blue button on it?

There is no WiFi on them ones...

Or are you thinking of a router, say in the hall, that another tenant has gotten in?

I know what routers look like, there's a central hub out the front of the house with a keypad on it, the Pinergy logo is printed in it also, it's hooked into the mains obviously. I can't see into the other flats so I don't know if the meters are cabled or wireless.

    These do not use wifi.

    You are correct...

Not the ones with the keypad on it - as I said, there are no Resident ESB Meters with WiFi....
