Realistically how much can I haggle off a used car?

This weekend I'm hoping to buy a car. There are two KIA's (both from dealers, not main ones though) I have my eye on, same year. One is €5999 and the other is €6985.

The cheaper one have 30k miles extra on the clock so I would prefer the other one but I don't want to pay a grand in the difference. How much do you reckon I can get the car down to?

I will be bringing a large envelope of cash with me on the day to help.

Got a link to the cars? It depends on how well priced they are relative to other cars amongst other things.

It's a how long is a piece of string question really, the answer is not an exact science.

Some dealers list prices at the higher end giving them the option to offer you a good 'discount'. Others low ball and wont budge on price, you need to compare the same car with the rest of the market.

I would probably offer 6500 cash.

I'd offer just under 6 for a sale there and then. What's the worse he can say, no. Then go up slightly and be prepared to start walking out the door and see how keen the sales guy is to do a deal.

Every sale is different, I bought an 05 E90 for €10,600 a few years back from a dealer who advertised it at €13,950, and recently bought an E60 sport for €14,700 from a dealer sticker price of €15,950. Just depends on the day.

I've pretty much got 10% off every used car I have ever bought and would take this as a give for any straight sale. Always start at 20% off or more and work towards your sale point, if you initially start at 10% you might get 5% off.

Thanks for the advice guys, going to look them tomorrow if they're still there, need to ring them this evening. Any advice for the call? Travelling up from Tipp to view them so should I get the initial questions out of the way, or wait until the day?

Going to offer 6k on the day and take it from there. Not planning on spending more than 6,6k on the car. Wish me luck!

Some garages are restricted to the amount of physical cash they can take from customers, 5000 euro is usually the limit!

Also Top Tip....once you're done with agreeing a sales price, then start of throwing in things like a tank of fuel, mats, the next service free, road tax, coats, pens, toy cars...who cares if you dont want it, it's free!!

€5999, what a silly price, just add the Euro people aren't stupid.

It's a psychological thing. 5995 or 5999 sounds and looks better than 6000. Same goes for fuel price per litre or stuff for sale in shops.

Oh no, I must ask about that so on the call. Fingers crossed they do, as the cash is withdrawn and banks aren't open tomorrow.

I know right but I'll be asking for my euro change :p

I'd wait and view/test drive the car before discussing money with them. Your hardly going to be collecting the car on the day you go to view it. Be patient and make a second trip back up if you have to rather than buying in hast just to only make one trip. The garage may also need a few days to sort things on the car if you spot things on inspection.

Also make sure you have a few cars to view in the area rather than putting all your eggs in one basket. Let them know you have a few other cars to view and you are eager to agree to buy on the day if the price is right for you.

    I won't be mentioning money until I'm 100% certain.

Well that is the plan. If it doesn't pan out, that's grand. I can go collect it another time but honestly I've been car shopping for a while now and I just want it over. Gotten to the stage where I know what I want, and I think I've found it in these cars, so if one turns out to be 'the one' I hope to take it home!

I'd love to go view a few more, the dealer with the cheaper KIA as a few diesels I want to test drive, so I'll check them out but other than that everything out there in my price range is too expensive or the mileage is ridiculous

I've bought cars from dealers that were a fair distance from me but I'd never rushed the deal through on the same day just for the sake of getting it over and done with. I've spotted things wrong with cars that needed to be sorted by the dealer before any money changed hands and I'd rather leave the car with them for a week to sort out than drive in it not done as it's very hard to get things sorted once they have your money. Putting yourself under pressure to buy and collect on the same day means you may end up compromising on things that you shouldn't.

I know buying a car can be a pain in the ass especially for people who are not petrol heads but buying a car is the second most important purchase in your life after a home so you shouldn't rush it. There are threads here all the time about people who bought cars without doing basic stuff beforehand and it usually ends in pain for them.

That's definitely work for the first one...

I know, and I'll try not rush things, and I will not be handing over any cash until the car is perfect, and if that means I have to wait, I will. I appreciate the advice.

But I do have high hopes though, the lower mileage KIA comes with 5 months left on the manufacturers warranty (and a three month dealer warranty). It has a full KIA service history, comes with a full Cartell history check, is serviced and valeted.

I've researched common problems with the model and know what to look out for, for the most part. I'll check for rust, dampness, overspray, body repairs. I'll pop the bonnet and check all the fluid levels. I'll press every button and flick every switch. During the test drive I will look out for wheel imbalances, slippy clutch, and spongy/vibrating brakes, I'll go up and down all the gears, and (with warning) harsh brake. I know diesels are louder than petrols (which I'm used to) so I'm bringing a friend who knows diesels a bit more.

Any other advice would be appreciated or if I'm missing something bit please tell me.

The fuel price is the most stupid of all 0.9 of a cent
