Ready turf / ready grass - advice on tough ground

We are planning on using ready grass / ready lawn / ready turf in our very (!) small yard. The area to be covered is only 4.25m x 2.3m. It's non negotiable on the real grass as we have cats.

The existing grass / dirt isn't in great condition - recent build, lots of builders rubble waste has already been found in the 8 x 6ft section we prepared for the shed.

We are getting differing reports on how far to dig down and how much top soil we need. The sod is 2cm, how far down do we go down? Some companies say 2in others 4in. The existing dirt is crap but we don't want to go overboard.
