    For another 1-200 euro, you could find a fairly decent second hand steel bike online, from the 80s or 90s, already built up with wheels, gruppo, etc.

    Yeah you've got a point there. What I'm really looking for is a bike for exploring the fire roads near me that I could use for commuting when the weather's too bad for the race bike. I'd be thinking tubeless tyres and maybe SRAM cx1 groupset. Hadn't really been considering disc brakes as an option but I suppose I'd be open to convincing.

    Kinesis Crosslight is a good option if not set on steel - has rack mounts and is suitable for racing.
