At least 2 weeks conor behan has been filling in for him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,691 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

The previous fill in - who sounds like the current fill in as above - in a response to a listener text 'promised' Larry would be back last weekend (16th April).

So it's 4 weeks since Larry has been on air.

He wasn't on Easter weekend either, The Rick o shea show with Cormac Battle was extended instead.

I just asked was Larry okay on Twitter and he's fine according to Conor behan. Just taking a small break. I mean he is in his seventies.

Maybe he should tell himself that when he's getting dressed.

It's very sad that because of RTE incompetence, Larry has become such an non entity in recent years, so much so that a 22 year old gay bar dj can fill in for him for weeks without anyone noticing. You wouldn't see that happening to Brian Matthew on BBC Radio 2 ?

If the music on Larry's playlist was better, especially on the Golden Hour, perhaps things would be better.
Most of that hour is just awful stuff. Does he have a very young producer or something like that?

I know plenty of Larry fans who no longer listen to him because they have no interest in a golden hour of the pussycat dolls and the black eyed peas. Really Larry should have been given an nice retirement slot on Radio 1 about 10 years ago, Maybe 8/10 on Weekend mornings.

Larry should be exempt from the stupid demographic rules for the Golden Hour. I'm in my 40's but IMHO, anything from 2000 onwards doesn't really count as golden. It's nice to remember but when you have 7 decades of pop and rock in the modern sense of the word to choose from, why limit yourself to such a small subset, especially when you have a host who's been on the air for almost all of that 7 decades. I could see the 14 yr olds switching off if they heard some Dusty Springfiled but I'd imagine it'd be quite listenable to anyone slightly on the older end of the target demographic i.e. 16 onwards.

That's not do discount the younger listeners but, from experience, I had no interest in bands who I actually liked back past maybe one or two albums from the current one at the 12-15 age range because the older stuff sounded old. Stupid I know but I changed my tune very shortly after.

Feel so sorry for Larry at this point, been treated so badly by 2fm bosses :(

Lads, it's not ageist, but a 78 year old has no place on a daytime show on a station aimed at 15-34 year olds, having a show called "The Golden Hour" playing songs no more than 10 years old.

    15-34 year old really?

That's the age group 2FM aim for I think. I'm in that age group but I only listen very rarely. It tends to be Chris and Ciara because there is very little on at that time.

Does Chris entertain you because he loves you?

I don't really like Chris tbh. I prefer the segment like Ciara's diary and the movie review and quiz.

The current playlist and shows are definitely aimed at a 15-34 audience.

Larrys had a good run at it, his time is up, certainly on 2Fm anyway.

I don't really see how RTE owe him anything

Show - albeit with the 50+ years younger temp presenter - just opened with a 17 year old song. Second track is 12.

Must be taking advice from boards!

On a more serious note, hardly the type of music traditional listeners of the 'Golden Hour' would tune in for. It would be a fine for an "Old Skool Sunday" type show that you see on Beat and iRadio.

I listened to him on RTÉ Gold last night (Sat) from 6-7 doing the old charts show. It was enjoyable and surely much more suited to Larry than 2FM.

RTE owe Larry the fact that he has been a 2fm constant since the first song on 2fm. Larry gogan whether you want to acknowledge it or not is an Irish radio legend. If any DJ deserves to leave how he/she wants to its Larry gogan.

2FM is not a retirement home.

BBC Radio 1 have been moving DJs off their schedule for being too old, where in this instance, too old constitutes being slightly older than the target audience, not 40+ years.

I know it's not a retirement home. I'm saying Larry should have a say in his retirement as he has given great service to 2fm and Irish radio down the years.

The whole weekend schedule on 2Fm sounds wrong. Larry is only part of the problem. His age isn't a massive factor tbh - I mean he sounds more or less the same now as he did 30 years ago... Larry's obviously old school and apart from the just a min quiz his links are mostly "that was x, coming up we have Y".

I can't imagine the current snapchat / twitter generation that 2FM are supposedly aiming at know who he is never mind relate to him. It's a bit embarrassing hearing the "oldies you'll always remwmber!" Jingle followed up by a Backstreet Boys track.

I reckon it's not for much longer... It does feel that the likes of Larry, O'Shea, Fanning, leahy, etc are working out they notice these days.

2FM / RTE have done an appalling job of rehashing their schedules over and over imo. The station has no identity.

nonsense. larry is a pro. he will be on the radio until his time is actually up.

in fairness, the "that was this is" is more the modern way then the old school way i think.

It's like if BBC R1 had put Wogan on at the weekend it would have been totally out of place on a youth station.Young people hear Larry and think oh that old fogy, especially after they hear those golden hour jingles. I don't see why rte don't move him to rte r1 and even give him back a weekday segment if he wants. Let him play actually old music, not songs from last year.

Give Larry one of Ronan Collins' shows to do a proper Golden Hour, Friday would be a good one. It'd probably do really well. A bit of voice tracking for RTE Gold alongside that and he'd be grand.

If RTE had a 'Radio 2' type service, it would be ideal for the likes of Larry.

Opening a can of worms here, but a merging of RnaG and Lyric would provide space for such a service, although perhaps the market is catered for with the large numbers of ILRs and 4FM.

I have to disagree with you here.

Don't get me wrong, I have the utmost respect for Larry, he is a legend as you've rightly said, but if 2FM wants to be a serious player among the demographic it claims to be aiming at, management should have stepped in a long time ago and moved him off to Radio 1, Lyric or Gold.

Being a legend shouldn't automatically give you a right to keep a slot on a national youth station that's so jarringly out of place.

That was said for a good few weeks now. It is worrying that Larry is not back at this stage, especially when the stand in says he will be back.

Why isn't Aiden Leonard filling in anymore?... suppose he was too old even for a stand in.

Michael Cahill doesn't do any fill ins anymore either

I don't think you can use BBC Radio 1 as a shining example when they have Annie Nightingale on their schedule.

Aidan is in charge of RTE Gold so presumably has no involvement in 2FM anymore

At 3am on a Tuesday morning. They also have Pete Tong, in his 50s on Friday nights.

The important thing that needs to be asked though is do they sound out of place there? (Genuine question as I don't listen to BBC).

Seriously, it isn't Larry's age that's an issue, to me anyway.

Just to put this in perspective, Backstreet Boys "Backstreets Back" album was released in 1997 (19 years ago).

If you were used to listening to Larry Gogan in 2006, the comparitive oldies he would be be playing would include:
    - With or without you
    - Ive had the time of my life
    - Where the streets have no name
    - I think we're alone now
    - I got my mind set on you
    Etc

Unfortunately for us all, Backstreet Boys are now oldies
