    I wonder.
It used to be the Nissan Serena, then some non-turbo diesel Peugeot.
Wonder what it is these days

    By slow I mean 0-60mph or 0-100kmph

Back in my day it used to be the Citroen 2CV. 0-100km/h in 35s :D

Ive got a feeling it's a frenchie, like one of those vanny cars with an autobox. Something automatic either way.

VW Caddy diesel? There is still a 75bhp version. Must be slow. Surely there are no N/A diesels any more these days? Otherwise one of those would surely win!

Despite what the boy racers think, a 1.4 golf is a pretty slow place to be....

The 1.25 59 bhp Fiesta takes a yawning 16.9 seconds and has a top speed of just 94 mph or 152 km/h.

That's surely the winner - even the 1.0 59 bhp Polo isn't that slow (it can do 100 mph or 161 km/h and does the sprint in 15.5).

The one I had to endure following to work this morning. Can't remember what it was, was almost bored into falling asleep.

I'd say something small, diesel and automatic. That Fiesta might be it.
    Some other contenders

    Kia Rio 1.1 CRDI - 74bhp / 0-60 15.5s / top speed 99mph
    Toyota Aygo 1.0 VVTI Xshift - 68bhp / 0-60 15.0s / top speed 99mph
    Hyundai i20 1.1 CRDI - 73bhp / 0-60 15.5s / top speed 99mph
    VW Polo 1.2 - 59bhp / 0-60 15.6s / top speed 98mph
    Opel Corsa 1.2 - 69bhp / 0-60 15.5s / top speed 101mph

I used to have a 1.5 non-turbo diesel Isuzu Gemini, had to rev the fukk out of it to get anywhere. No idea what official time was given for it but I timed it at around 45 seconds 0-60, crazy to think it was slower than a 2CV.

I don't think anything will ever rival the Serena 2.2d. Christ it was dangerously slow, I had one as a work van back in the mid 90's. I absolutely detested it and was delighted when a 20 ton digger accidentally put the roof of it in and wrote it off. I would rather walk somewhere than ever have to drive one of them again. 0-60 was non existent as it simply wouldn't go that fast, ever.

Current 1.4 Golf has a minimum of 120bhp and sub 10 secs to 60. Not quick, but not slow by most standards either.

I meant the old 1.4 golf. Not the fancy tsi version.

The 1.4 focus will always be a horrendously slow car. It wouldn't pull your foreskin back.

A quick google (I know it's cheating...) brought up this article from 2013 -

The ten slowest cars you can buy

Many of them aren't on sale in Ireland, but an interesting list anyway.

Twizy would have been my suggestion, but it's maybe not in the spirit of the OP's question!

Remember the Golf 2.0 SDIs? Now they were slow.

My father had the 1.9 SDI in a 99 Felicia. Icebergs move faster.... very light on diesel to its credit, unlike the earlier mentioned Serena which managed to be both as slow as a slug and a savage on diesel.

I have a 1.4 litre focus, it is fantastically slow. But I've never owned any other car so ignorance is bliss right now. Have had my eye on a golf gti for a while though...

    Renault Twizy
    (technically not a car)

but 0-62........ NEVER.....it cant do that speed ha ha

Had a quick look into this and it seems like these are the contenders here in Ireland. Surely there's something slower though...

    Toyota Yaris 1.0 15.3s 0-100
    Dacia Sandero 1.5 Diesel 14.6s 0-100
    Renault Twingo 1.0 (non-turbo) 14.6s 0-100
    Kia Picanto 1.0 14.5s 0-100
    Dacia Sandero 1.2 14.5s 0-100

Oh, apparently the 1.2 Fiesta is 16.8s 0-100.... damn.

    16.9, as I said earlier:)

    My bad, missed that :P

Anything worse out there? Seems the smaller cars (than Fiesta) actually fare better, most likely due to weight.

I remember travelling in one of these once. I think it's the worst car I've ever been in, and that includes the Skoda Estelle and Opel Tigra.

By the way, the 2.3 diesel wasn't the slowest one, they did a 2.0 earlier on in the car's life which took 31, yes, 31 seconds to hit 60.

Most of other basic engine options would be just a second or two faster...

There are plenty of cars out there that can barely overtake the above, unless there is a nice 2km long straight road ahead :)

16.9 seconds for a 1.2 Fiesta? Jesus that's shocking, they can seem spritely enough at lower speeds, must run out of puff at the 50km/h mark.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

    theyve detuned the 1.2
The 3 cylinder 1.0 non turbo is faster now. I guess that's a good way of phasing the 4 cylinder out.

Seems to be a common thing with smaller cars - they feel like the Millennium Falcon in hyperdrive while goin 75 km/h!

Had this with a 1.3 Fiesta I rented a few times - it felt very zippy, but then you'd realize it would struggle to go past 100 km/h, and if the road was slightly uphill, you could fotget about even 80.

Same with my mother's 1.4 TDI Fabia - I'd swear it feels faster than a 2.0 petrol, then you realize that all that huffing, puffing and noise got you up to 70!
