Normally full Irish licence with minimum 2 years is required.

To hire a car in Ireland over 2 years and over 25 ,in mainland Europe over 1 year and be over 21.Where are you going to?

It depends on the particular car rental company.

Ring them and check. It varies and they may have an option of hiring and loading you with an extra fee.

There's no general pan-European rule for this. Varies country to country and company to company.

To be honest, it could be difficult seeing as you have only just got your licence. Might be best to take a bus.

OP, forget these kinds of comments. Call and ask, I would think you would be fine. A lot of rental companies charge a surcharge for drivers under 25, but not all have a requirement to have a license for 2+ years.

Very dismissive and derogatory aren't you? I would say the OP should forget your comments. "I would think you would be fine". Have you ever tried to rent a car with a new licence?
From experience, you will find it almost impossible to rent a car with a new licence. Of course give the rental companies a call to confirm but there is no need for "forget these kinds of comments" when people are only trying to help.

I have rented a car in Ireland and Europe after only having my license for 3 weeks. Just read the terms and conditions of the bigger companies or give them a call.

Most people are assuming that the 2 years are standard across car rental companies so their advice should be ignored.

Erm...2 years is standard contrary to your belief. But there are exceptions, this is what the op needs to check. I definitely wouldn't ignore other people's opinions

depends where you're renting. Rented a car on the canary island once where they didn't even ask for a license but the canaries aren't like most places.

Just contact a few rental agencies. They'll answer your question.Every company has different t&c's.

OK, resurrecting this thread :) I just got my full Irish license. I'm well over 25 (I've been driving for more than 25 years, just not in Ireland!). I still have a valid US license from the state I moved here from, although I have not been living there for two years. I have rented a car on my US license before, while I was living there. If I rent a car in the UK for an upcoming business trip, which license should I present?

Use your Irish one in the EU. There shouldn't be any issue at all unless you're on a Learner Permit.

Also if you're no longer resident in a US state, the validity of the licence could be questionable.

Do you still have an address there?
Could you be reached at that address?

If not, you could be misrepresenting yourself as a US resident and basically providing false information to the rental company and EU countries' authorities and the car insurer.

It's not an issue unless you crash and then you could find yourself in a right mess.

Normally, you are supposed to be living at the place registered on the licence. The validity may be a lot more than just the expiry date on the card.

I did back in the day, but that was a good number of years ago now. I know plenty of people who have rented in France and Germany with fresh new licenses.

You were quick to misquote me too.

They are the only ones who can answer this question.

If you're over 30 you can use Enterprise even newly passed. I use them frequently and rate them quite highly.
