Nice read indeed and makes me feel somewhat better that I'm not the only one taking a beating in A4 every Sunday and not winning anything!

There's actually plenty of good reading in the supplement as well as Doyle's piece (once you ignore the RSA interview). You can see the headlines at http://www.irishtimes.com/news/health

Disappointed that the new DCC Cycling Officer wasn't available for this: http://www.irishtimes.com/news/health/road-outrage-cyclists-call-for-a-better-deal-in-dublin-1.2606296

I wish I hadn't read that RSA interview.. what did I expect

Didn't read the RSA interview, but I'm pleasantly surprised by the supplement, 20 pages of mostly positive articles.

did anyone spot the placement of the cyling stories on the irish times webpage? they are sub headlines under the main headline where the RSA is calling for a 30km/hr speed limit in towns.

given the headlines and sub-headlines are typically related, it gives the impression the two are connected, and you can be pretty sure drivers won't be too happy with the idea that speed limits are going to be reduced even further and cyclists are at least one of the reasons

and i don't for one second think it is accidental

I surprised a regular and witty poster to this forum, who happens to also feature in one of the pics, hasn't appeared yet with some contribution!

Perhaps he lying low. I hope I haven't blown his cover!:D

few years ago on eurosport one of the americans was asked what happened after he caved in on a tough mountain stage. He answered with an enormous explanation about being in the cave of pain and I dropped the flashlight and , man, it was dark in there....."

    ...... and Kelly answered "O.K." :)

Nice article, tho someone needs to tell him Kelly aint the angel he paints him as.
A change from the IT's recent role as the mouthpiece of Irish Water!

I thought Roisin Ingles piece was nice and positive.

This said I find the times a morally dubious paper with no backbone.

    Ahhhhh not Roisin Ingle ...

And I set the Sun as the benchmark for lack of morals #jft96

Enjoyed those articles and nice to see largely positive coverage :)

Not all their correspondents see the sunny side of cycling or the 'cycling community' - whatever that is?

Not my cuppa tea but has to be said the most positive article on cycling I have read in awhile.

Years ago, you would have been right but now, maybe a few papers have journalists with morals but overall, the only paper I can think of that hasn't crossed a line yet is the SBP and I don't even read that. The indo is nothing more than clickbait or trying to prop up their other commercial interests (property website), the times sells it's morals down the toilet with the knock of a PR company (Kate Fitzgerald), the Sun (as above), the mirror (its basically a glossy on paper), the mail (quite literally making sh1t up) and the list goes on.

It seems it was his reaction to the public criticism he got on Twitter etc for his helmet comments.

I rather like the Sun, in a limited way. If anyone can think of a better headline for a story about the installation of a condom-vending machine at Templemore than "Cops and Rubbers", you have earned my awe.

The Daily Mail is my bête noire. It's easily as nasty as the Sun at its worst, but it's not funny, ever.

(Obviously, the Sun's treatment of Liverpool was unforgivable.)

Did Roisín Ingle have an article years ago about trying out cycling to work and it being a nightmare?

I haven't read the positive article yet, but I've seen very good vibes on Twitter.

More his overreaction, all that was said on twitter was "Eh...no?" at which point he tried to imply it was a joke and that cyclists have no humour. His article wasn't great, it certainly wasn't satire. Instead of taking it like a grown up and saying, fair enough, he just cried like a teenager about it being not what he meant and how cyclists (as a whole) just don't get him.

I remember one of the columnists talking about cycling around the LUAS works not that long ago, possibly Roisin, could have been the times or the indo. They were giving out about the risks and the dirty looks and possibly an argument they got into over either a ped walking out or her hopping up on the pavement for convenience. Either way, my memory did not paint the writer in a good light.

EDIT: Found it, it was Roisin
    http://www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/people/r%C3%B3is%C3%ADn-ingle-on-a-collision-course-1.2495309

My mistake, the cyclist was in the wrong, so was the pedestrian, in fact it was a whingy article about people being either d1cks or a$$holes, neither coming out well. i presume the cyclist is Roisin by her after thoughts.

Ah, yeah (the Sun as well, I think?), but I meant a better headline for the Templemore story, rather than a better headline in general.

Was longer ago than that. I think the IT was doing one of its occasional set of features about cycling, and one staff writer had a shot for the first time of cycling around the centre of Dublin, and found it intimidating. Not surprisingly, as it is a bit intimidating until you get used to it all. Seem to remember it was RI. Glad she wasn't put off anyway, and went on to enjoy it.

She had definitely one in the last year about an elderly pedestrian and an overweight footpad cyclist getting in an argument. I don't remember the point of it, but I may have fallen asleep before getting to the end.

    edit: Cram has it above.

I guess it’s inevitable that he RSA couldn’t resist peddling (ha!) their mantra in their interview, their devotion to the cause of educating cyclist on how scary and dangerous the world really is is impressive. I can’t help picturing the collective RSA staff starting each day of work with The Lord’s prayer:

    Hail Mary,
    Full of grace,
    Non-reflective clothing,
    Is a bloody disgrace.

    Hail Mary,
    Full of grace,
    Wear a cycling helmet,
Or we’ll punch you in the face.

    etc.
