Bought a new TV - Sony Bravia.

Hooked it up to channels today - reception is disappointing.

Like tis grand but nothing special - I was expecting a lot more for what I paid. Any suggestions?

I am not hooked up to a HD service but I would still say it is very average.

I have a TV that is 5/6 years old/half the price and the reception is about the same.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

When you say reception is disappointing do you mean you get breakup on Saorview channels? If so, the problem is with the aerial. If you mean the picture quality is disappointing can you specify how this is the case? If your TV has no HD what are you watching RTE1/2 in as they are both HD only on Saorview and RTE2 is HD only on satellite in ROI?

How large is the TV, what have you been looking at so far?

I'll explain more - the picture is ok - nothing special.

I am watching TV thru standard definition thru EIR.

The clarity is not super is what I mean - certainly not like what I've seen on other new TV's and they were not all on HD.

I paid 1,000 Euros and it is no better than my old LG TV where I have standard definition also.

Mainly I was disappointed with the sports channels as that is my main interest.

Try a playing a blu ray through hdmi cable
or watching some live sports on RTE2 off the aerial

You can't really tell until you watch a HD picture.

In fact a large screen tv will look worse in SD because of the lower definition.

If you don't have a HD service you aren't getting the full benefit of the TV.

I hear you on that - let me explain.

The reception off my 6/7 year LG TV is similar to my brand new Sony Bravia - hence I am disappointed - I get the fact I don't have a HD package but still a bit disappointed if you get me.

It is a 43 inch TV so not exactly massive.

    43 inches.

Netflix was better all right and more what I was expecting.

When I went from a 32 inch CRT to a 40 inch LED I had a similar experience, the SD channels were shockingly bad. You should look at going down the Freesat route and/or Saorview to get the free HD channels.

What live sport is left on RTE2 HD to watch?

To be fair they are not worse - just no real improvement I suppose. If I had known I wouldn't exactly have lashed out a 1,000 - I'd maybe have just bought another LG.

I was quite looking forward to watching sports on the new TV...

Maybe I should have done more research....Maybe I need to play around with the settings a bit more....Not too sure....

You dont seem to be appreciating the difference between SD and HD, its a lipstick on a pig situation, you can buy any tv or monitor you want for whatever money and the SD signal will still be poor looking if thats all you supply it with, SD is for old tvs, get a combi box like an Ariva and watch Saorview and Freesat all in one list, its free and the picture is perfection.

What live sport is left on RTE2 HD to watch?

    GAA Hurling & Football Championship

    UEFA EURO 2016 - 30 games

    RIO Olympics 2016

    Horse Racing

    European Athletic Championships

    FIFA World Cup qualifiers

Be careful also of the "out of the box" picture settings on your new TV.
I don't know about Sony - but on many TVs all kinds of picture processing and "noise reduction" options are by default set to "ON" and IMO you don't want any of these - especially for best SD picture.

Change all that to "OFF" and then adjust the brightness / contrast / colour to your satisfaction. You might be surprised how big a change that can make.

Cheers - going to play about with it later
