Torque Wrench not releasing

I have a Lifeline Torque wrench, purchased from Wiggle less than 6 months ago.

Yesterday I was tightening my stem onto my carbon steerer tube, when I realised it wasn't releasing. I followed the instructions to tilt the head back and forth in order to re-lubricate the mechanism but still, it wouldn't release, even at the lowest torque settings.

Wiggle have been very good, and offered a refund or exchange.

Does anyone have similar experience of a misbehaving torque wrench? Thinking I'll get a refund and try a different brand. For instance, this Topeak one looks less likely to fail.

Also, is there any risk that I might have over tightened my stem onto the steerer tube, and caused damage? Is there a way of checking this without X-raying it?

    Cheers.
