Hi, does anyone know what this place is? Is it a protected site? If so what's the history behind it? It's just between the Museum and the Thai Garden restaurant, in the Spanish arch area.

Google Comerford House for your answer.

Thanks. Is it part of comerford house though? It looks like it's a separate building. Wonder why it hasn't been restored?

Would have helped if I'd looked at the picture I suppose, probably not the same place.

Could it be part of the old city wall? I think the old city wall was extended to the river to protect the quays, in the late 1500s.

Is it not The Spanish Arch?

    This too shall pass.

City Wall is the correct answer. Found it on the protected structures list.

They should at least tidy it up and make a feature out of it. It's a bit of an eye sore at the moment.

Do you mean Galway City Council when you say "they" or the Galway City Museum (under umbrella of City Council). Might be worth writing a letter to the responsible Director of Services?

Yes, I meant Galway City Council sorry. Ya good idea, will try contacting them. So many tourists visit that area and it just looks awful. They could hide that electricity box as well.

Is there a forum for the public to make suggestions about the city?

Are you joking? This is Galway City Council we are talking about it. We would not want that kind of thing here now! On second thoughts probably better to contact your local Cllr's (Central Ward) rather than the Director of Services.
    Here is the listing:

Could we create a thread on here Titled "For the Attention of Galway City Council" and have people make their own comments/suggestions?

Please don't, it'll just be another "omg, I am so outraged. Someone else should do something!!"
Venting here is like chatting to some fella down the pub. You may feel you are doing something, but you're not.

Contact your politicians that I hope you spent some time voting for.

There are plenty of options for contacting them: http://www.galwaycity.ie/Contact-Us/

My experience is that they work, if you think about who you should contact (based on whether they actually can do anything about the issue) and do so politely.

    YMMV.

That's the key isn't it. If some of the usual posters here transfer their nasty attitude to their letters I can really see why they often get paid little heed

    Thank you. I'll do that.

Will be interested to see how you get on. Could be difficult to see whose responsibility this is within the Council. You may end up getting the merry go round. I think for an issue like this contacting a Cllr would be a better option. They can raise it as a question at one of the next Council meeting's.

Why would it be the responsibility of anyone other than the Heritage Officer?

    Why does it matter?

Councillor-wise you could try Niall McNelis; he operates a business close to there, and he is also the current chairman of the tidy towns committee. Donal Lyons is also on the committee. Items like this are ones they are trying to improve.

They are organising a citywide cleanup on May 22nd in conjunction with national volunteer week for anyone interested in helping out.
